ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today named the West Indies “A” Team for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The West Indies will play three four-day “Test” matches against South Africa “A” from 21 November to 8 December.

Joshua Da Silva, the wicket-keeper/batsman has again been named as captain following the West Indies “A” victory in the series in Bangladesh earlier this year. Tevin Imlach, the other wicket-keeper/batsman has been named as the vice-captain.

The 14-member squad includes five players with Test match experience: Da Silva; batsmen Kirk McKenzie, and Tagenarine Chanderpaul; along with fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis.

The squad also includes three newcomers to the international level: Kevlon Anderson, the right-handed batsman; fast bowler Shamar Joseph, and allrounder Abhijai Mansingh. All three made their first-class debuts earlier this year.

Team is too bowler heavy! I would have loved to see Yardie Johnson in the mix!

However, they give him a go against Ireland, albeit I think he's bigger than that match up, but give thanks for small mercies!

I am glad that he has gotten into one of the teams but he did not exactly light up the Super 50. I think that they are correct to put him with the emerging players for the time being and let him ease his way into big man cricket.

I am glad to see WI investing in legspinners after hard working guys like Imran Khan never really got opportunities. However, I would have sent either Cariah or Walsh to SA with the other playing England. I thought Walsh was excellent in Super 50, one of the two bright spots in the entire competition, the other being Bravo's responsible batting. I would have seized on this opportunity to get him to bowl longer spells because he hardly bowled for Leewards in the FC competition unless he is being pigeon holed as purely a white ball bowler so the England tour is the better option for him. I am excited about the prospect of Walsh/Motie/Sinclair or Chase bowling in tandem against England in the middle overs. I do not think that Mansingh's bowling is yet of a A team standard but hope I am proven wrong for his sake.

Mansingh if he works hard as an allrounder developing both batting and bowling skills could become a decent player, he seems to have good attitude towards his game. I am hoping that been out of highly competitive matches have not affected his great career start, I would have invested in him during the last A-team tour.

With all due respect, we don’t need “decent players”.

We need exceptional players.

Decent players won’t help us improve as a team
