“I am the leader of the PNM and a PNM government, Really, Dr Rowley?

At his news conference yesterday to address ­national ­security matters, Prime Minister Keith Rowley was asked by Express political editor Ria Taitt about the sense of hopelessness felt by citizens because of crime. Dr Rowley’s response was revealing.

“I am the leader of the PNM and a PNM government,” he said, “and we are not about hopelessness.”

As Prime Minister, Dr Rowley is not supposed to represent only supporters of the People’s National Movement. Nor is there any such entity as a PNM (or a United National Congress) government. The government is only under the (temporary) control of the majority of elected Members of Parliament who belong to a specific political party or a political coalition. In any case, does Dr Rowley seriously believe that his party’s supporters are not also feeling hopeless about crime, especially since the vast majority of “hotspots” are in PNM constituencies?
