High-flying TKR favourites against Royals, Kings look to breach Amazon Warriors' fortress
Eliminator: Trinbago Knight Riders vs Barbados Royals
Though Nicholas Pooran's barnstorming century was not enough for Trinbago Knight Riders to secure a top-two slot, they can draw some positives from their win in the final league match of CPL 2024. Despite the injury-enforced absence of Sunil Narine and despite being the last team to play in the Guyana leg, TKR managed to breach fortress Providence this season. It remains to be seen whether Narine has recovered enough to return in the playoffs. TKR also had to contend with injuries to Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo - who has now retired from all cricket - at various points during the season. This has left Kieron Pollard scrambling for options - Tim David, for example, bowled with the new ball when TKR last met Barbados Royals in Tarouba last week. If Narine isn't fit yet, will TKR run the risk of handing local offspinner Bryan Charles a T20 debut in a knockout game? All eyes will be on Pooran once again. He's already had a record-breaking year - his 2160 runs in 2024 is already the most by a batter in a calendar year in T20 cricket - and he's now two sixes away from surpassing Chris Gayle's sixes tally in the CPL. His familiarity with the Providence pitch, having played for and captained Amazon Warriors in the past, could serve TKR well.
As for Royals, their run has mirrored that of their parent franchise - Rajasthan Royals - in the IPL. After having been the early pace-setters with five wins in their first six games, they ran out of gas and lost four in a row. Captain Rovman Powell's batting struggles - 137 runs in eight innings at an average of 22.83 and strike rate of 117.09 - haven't helped. That strike rate drops to 91.66 against spin. The South Africa pair of Quinton de Kock, who is currently the highest run-getter this season, and David Miller will have to do the heavy-lifting with the bat. Royals' bowling attack looks in much healthier shape with Maheesh Theekshana, Keshav Maharaj, Naveen-ul-Haq and Jason Holder all doing the job for them at different stages. Unless Royals' batters back up their bowling, TKR are favourites to make it 3-0 against them this season.

Pollard on TKR's eliminator vs Royals: If you blink, you're out
TRINBAGO Knight Riders will battle Barbados Royals in the eliminator to stay alive in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League at Guyana National Stadium, in Providence, Guyana on October 1 at 7 pm.
TKR ended the preliminary phase with a convincing 74-run win over Guyana Amazon Warriors on September 29. Despite the crushing win, TKR missed out on a top-two playoff spot. TKR finished third and Royals ended fourth after the preliminary phase. First-placed Amazon Warriors will play second-placed St Lucia Kings in qualifier one on October 2 at 7 pm. The winner advances to the final on October 6. The loser of qualifier one will play the winner of the eliminator on October 4 at 7 pm in qualifier two with the winning team moving on to the final.
In a TV post-match interview after TKR defeated Amazon Warriors, TKR captain Kieron Pollard said there is no room for any slip-up at this stage of the tournament.“This is the opportunity now where as you make a mistake and you blink you out. If you lose that’s it,” Pollard said. Speaking in a media conference on September 30, Pollard said qualifying for the playoffs was the aim when the tournament bowled off.
“From a Knight Riders perspective, in a tournament (when) you start you want to qualify (for the playoffs),” he said. “I think that was a step in the right direction. We have been battling a lot of injuries in our camp, but kudos to the guys the way they came out each and every time to perform under that sort of pressure, where from a selection perspective we were never quite sure who will be on the park.” Spinner Sunil Narine missed the last few games due to injury and against the Kings on September 24, Dwayne Bravo got injured while fielding. Bravo announced his retirement from cricket two days later.
“NOW’S THE TIME’
TKR take aim at Royals in CPL Eliminator
IT’S crunch time in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League and Trinbago Knight Riders’ top batter Nicholas Pooran says that now is the time for himself and his team-mates to step up for the team.
TKR finished their group stage campaign in the T20 tournament with a big 74-run victory over hosts and defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors at Providence in Guyana on Sunday night. But the effort was not enough to help them finish higher than third and avoid having to face the Barbados Royals this evening from 7 p.m. in an Eliminator, the losers exiting the tournament.
“Three teams finishing on 14 points, it goes to show the strength of the other teams in the tournament as well as the cricket that has been played, and we just looking forward to the most important part of the tournament, which is the playoffs,” TKR captain Kieron Pollard said yesterday at a pre-playoffs media conference.

Once teams reach the knockout stages, they strive to punch above their weight, but even a minor lapse in concentration and complacency can come back to haunt them. These star-studded teams are well aware of the risks and understand how errors can compound, meaning they will need to bring their A-game to stay alive in the CPL 2024 season. A loss would send one of these teams packing, while a win will secure them one more game in Qualifier 2. Toss and team updates are coming shortly, so stay tuned.
Trinbago Knight Riders have won the toss and decided to bat
....
Barbados Royals will need to put up a concerted team effort to beat the heavyweights and ensure they don't let pressure get the better of them, regardless of the reputations of their opponents.
For the Royals, Proteas star Quinton de Kock must step up and put a hefty price on his wicket. They will also rely on Kadeem Alleyne to respond with aggression, while the lower middle order, comprising Alick Athanaze, Rovman Powell, and David Miller, should be prepared to rescue the team in case of a top-order collapse. BR has a balanced bowling attack featuring Jason Holder, Maheesh Theekshana, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Keshav Maharaj, providing them with the quality needed to topple any opponent on their day.
....
TKR fought valiantly and nearly snatched a top-two spot from the Warriors in their last game, but now they'll have to take the longer route to reach the final. Nicholas Pooran has been in red-hot form and often transforms into a powerhouse during high-octane knockout contests. He delivered a spectacular performance in the 30th match and will look to maintain his fine touch. The spin attack, comprising Motie and Waqar, is lethal and could give nightmares to opposing batters. Akeal Hosein will do his thing unfazed by the enormity of the situation, as he is an utterly professional player looking to take early wickets and stymie the run flow. He will be key for TKR.
...
Trinbago Knight Riders come into this match with winning momentum, having secured two consecutive victories, most importantly against table-toppers Guyana Amazon Warriors in their last group stage fixture. They definitely have form on their side, finishing the group stage with an impressive seven wins and only three defeats, ending Round 1 with 14 points. In contrast, it's a different story for Barbados Royals, who have lost four games in a row before entering the playoffs. However, they will be keen to put past performances behind them, knowing that a win at this stage is what truly matters. Royals finished the group stage with five wins and five losses, ending up with 10 points.

Jordan and Narine have been included in the team, while Parris and Edward have been left out
Danny Morrison is lying on the pitch and shares the ground dimensions: 75 meters down the ground and 66 meters on the leg and off sides. He says the surface as flat, hard, and very dry, suggesting that batters will love batting on it and smashing the ball to all parts
In reply to sgtdjones
Where’s the crowd?
Rovman Powell: That experience (Guyana leg) isn't a pleasant one but tonight provides an opportunity to change that. It's for us to keep winning those key moments. Before we came to Guyana, we won those moments. Since we came to Guyana, we have been a little bit unlucky. We bring back Cornwall, Maharaj misses out, in comes Obed McCoy also. Keep the ball as straight as possible as a bowling group. Sometimes it can be a good batting wicket. When you get chances, your key players have to take it. It's also an opportunity for the key players to get back in the game. For the last few games, our important players went missing.
Kieron Pollard: We are gonna have a bat first. Latest data has shown that five times a team batting first has won. It's a good track. Two changes. Sunil Narine comes in for Parris. Edwards misses out and Chris Jordan comes back in. We know this pressure. If you lose, you are out. For us, it's about sticking to our plans - how we want to go about our batting and bowling. Sticking to our plans for as long as possible.

That's a crackerjack! Right on money! Bamboozles him with a teasing one on back of a length and it slides across leg as he shimmies down leg and stays deep, trying to smother the spin by playing down the ground but the ball curves away from him and disturbs the furniture. What a delivery, smart bowling!

9:30pm The umpires, groundstaff and both teams' captains are having a chat right now. The situation is quite frustrating for players, fans, and everyone involved. It's the all-important eliminator, and both teams are keen to get on with the action
In reply to sgtdjones
This is turning out to be a long wait. The playing conditions allow for an hour extension before we start tom lose overs and that has just ticked by.
10:52 pm is the cut-off time for a 5-over contest. Irrespective of when this game starts, we're bound to lose a few overs and the target for the Royals will be set in accordance with the DLS method. As of now, that one light tower has clonked off completely and all we can wait is to be patient
...
9:53pm: Two light towers went out and one of them is back on so it looks like we are not far away from getting everything ready for a restart. It's been an hour since the game stopped, so we'll start to lose overs--pretty much similar to what happens during rain interruptions
Overs have began to reduce
10:52 cut off time
Could be a minimum of 5 overs a side
If no play is possible TKR goes through
..
9:57pm: Trinbago Knight Riders will go through if the light towers are not fixed because of their better standing on the points table. 10:52pm is the cut-off time for a five-over contest
Glorious uncertainties...
...11 minutes to go and counting...
10:45pm: We are very close to what would be a sad end to a crucial affair and Barbados Royals will be hard done by this unforeseen circumstance. It's bizarre and unheard of in cricket; a rare instance where a floodlight issue denies a team a proper chance. This will take a toll on the tournament's reputation and will not be an easy pill to swallow for all the stakeholders involved. We're under 10 minutes away from the cut-off time and it looks like Trinbago Knight Riders are on their way to getting another chance to make it to the final
...10: 52 cut off time....
Its 10:50 and counting...

It is easier to beat Bim on the field of play than all this frustration.
Hold your horses! It looks like the tower has been given a new lease of life and is slowly shining bright like a diamond. The efforts of the chief electrician have seemingly reaped rewards
"The staff at the ground are working on fixing the broken light tower. We can start a 5 over game at 11:01. If it goes past that time TKR advance to Qualifier 2 as they finished higher in the league stage." reads a tweet from CPL official account

A lousy shortish delivery on the pads and Q de Kock says thank you very much, tugs it nonchalantly off his pads away from deep square for a four

Jordan to Powell, OUT
Miscues the skier; shortish and nipping away touch from off, Powell can't get on top of the bounce and tries to lift it up and over midwicket, gets a top-edge that flies high into the night sky and Jordan tracks the ball from the bat, into the air and then into his safe hands. Good catch in a tricky situation but hold on! Has he overstepped?Third umpire is checking from different angles and looks like he missed getting some part of the shoe, the margin is in millimeters. Whoa, that will hurt TKR! It's a no-ball! The drama continues! Fist-bump between batters as they look to refocus and try again. Jordan needs to move past this unforced error

Narine to Miller, SIX runs
Over the wicket, erred in his length, fuller and deviates a touch, he takes a good look, allows it to come closer and then BANG, slog-sweeps it several rows back over long-on. It's a 106 meters monster hit! Excellent timing and placement, Miller at his best!

Jordan to Miller, 2 runs
Jordan to finish his two-over spell. This is the over that will decide the fate for both teams. Over the wicket, length ball with some away seam movement towards middle, hacked away and it's a tough one for the fielder at deep midwicket, does well in the end to quickly get rid of the ball and returns a sharp throw

Jordan to Miller, FOUR runs
Tries again and misses the blockhole and that's enough for Miller to munch that over extra cover for four, that has been dispatched insolently, fierce battle, imagine if it went for 20 overs...superb shot, lots of bottom hand and uses brute force in his wrists to manufacture it from there, no chance for fielder to cut it off. 19 off 9

Jordan to Miller, FOUR runs
Back-to-back boundaries! Jordan releasing the pressure, letting his team down! Strays on the pads and pays the price, gets duly dispatched over midwicket for a four, Miller gets underneath and uses his fast hands, and subtle wrists to club it for a four, one bounce over the rope. Crowd screaming at the top of their lungs, they waited patiently

Jordan to Miller, SIX runs
Oh my word! Miller at his best! Misses his target and gets hammered! Low full-toss on middle, smoked over wide long-on for a 91 meters maximum. Oh, he is such a joy to watch when on song, situation was tailored-made for him and he is making TKR pay! Absolutely thumped that one off the meat, crowd noisy! Pollard chatting with Jordan. I think Miller has killed the chase already! What an onslaught!

Killer Miller
WE batted too slow Poooo and Pollard...
David Miller, Player of the Match: Nice to hit few of the middle, in a five over game, you know you got no options, you just just have to go for it. (lights delay) A lot of things were going on; we obviously wanted to stay, so we had to wait it out and thankfully it came back on
Like I said, you got no option, you got five overs to go, and you need 60, we got 11 batters and we got to try and use every single ball that we got. There was no option, just had to go from ball one and it worked out pretty well so pretty thankful about that. (on world cup memories), to be honest, the world cup wasn't on my mind, it's a quarter final, but it's always big stakes. We are just happy to do really well at the backend in five overs and it was just an extraordinary game in the sense. I have never been in a situation like that with the lights going off and not being able to play so just thankfully we got the result.
(on BR campaign) playoff game is just once off game, now we move to semis, what's done is done. Obviously, we have done really good work in group stage and obviously bad as well. Now it's about taking this momentum forward and hopefully get into semifinal and finals.
