Jofra Archer And WI Selection

He made his England debut on May 3, 2019 in an ODI against Ireland in Dublin, and despite trouble with injuries, which have significantly limited his appearances, he remains a speedster of the highest calibre, capable of wreaking significant havoc.

“No, I’m fine thanks,” was Archer’s terse response years ago when asked if he’d be open to a change of heart regarding his decision to seek to represent England instead of the West Indies. The then 22-year-old fast-bowling sensation went on to say this: “I was angry with the West Indies, so that helped me with my decision to come and try to play for England. I wasn’t selected, so I had to think about what to do next. Once I knew it was an option, it was an easy decision to move to England.”

We do not know what would have happened were the English path unavailable to him. We could reasonably assume that his quality is such that he’d have quickly convinced the West Indies selectors of his worth, and it is unfortunate for the struggling Caribbean side that a player of his skills chose to offer his services to others who didn’t need them quite as much.

Looking on, and going by what he has already achieved, it would certainly appear that the West Indies selectors erred at the time in leaving out Archer for the under-19 World Cup, especially since he is currently far ahead of those who were chosen ahead of him.

But this is an argument that can only be made in the clear view of hindsight. It is safe to assume the selectors thought the fast bowlers chosen surpassed Archer in ability. He clearly thought otherwise and was, therefore, peeved by their decision.

I respect every man's right to make a decision in his own best interests. I find it interesting that the decision was expressed as being made out of vexedness/sense of entitlement that he did not get pick when everyone knows that only 15 players can get picked. In any event, happy for him that he has found his niche but I really do not see why we need to be having constant headlines about him. Were there these headlines in England about Gordon Greenidge or in South Africa about the many who have played for England??

Jofra also said that after u19 in the Caribbean and if you can't make your national side then there was no intermediate level where you could develop your skills.
I believe that if Jofra had stayed in Bim he would have disappeared similarly to Jerome Jones his Foundation team mate who actually made the West Indies u19 team.
We have lots of u19 talent but we can't bridge the chasm between u19 cricket and test cricket

Jerome was so good that he made the u19 team at 16+ and at 18 y.o, what a talent he was at youth level.

Harnessing talent is the biggest obstacles for not only West Indies but also Pakistan.....

Fast bowlers are very delicate men.....

We always talk about those, who choose other countries....

What about fast bowler, we lost due to CWI slackness..

Oshane Thomas....that jump before delivery...a rare gem bust into scene....wreck India in India....then..... injury...lost....

Chemar Holder....took all by himself, his rehabilitation.....

Jerome Jones.... simply faded due to non grooming...

Now that we have a new selection policy, which if applied honestly.... would surely minimise the wastage...

We have to give credit to the WI selectors sometimes. Archer seems to be injured all the time, and maybe the WI knew that. It is good that he was able to get a pay day in England. It serves them well to have to absorb the costs of caring for and paying him. All part of reparation.
