Why would any coach make such a decision?

If Hope, as captain, made the decision……it was just a stupid decision that made no sense.

You put an inexperienced player with 10 ODI’s to his name who doesn’t open to open in Hope’s place.

I wonder what the explanation will be…..

Testing resources to gain experience?

Or maybe…..coach thinks the move was morally successful and felt like he at least made a half century in those conditions?

Rubbish by management...... Your best batsmen should bat at 1,2,3&4....

if i recall right i think he made the decision or perhaps they collectively for him to bat closer to the middle and be a finisher sort of....or at least that is what we heard

i think overall the move was to support his t20 development

When Pooran is here, he should keep wicket.

The main issue with the squad in Sri Lanka is bowling.

Without Hosein and Russell, this attack looks toothless.

yea maybe they will rethink it but clearly Shai is looking to go more that route so not sure he is going to go back to anchoring

Russell and Hosein haven't played ODIs a while and WI won at home

the ball was wet so it's hard to judge

on paper it is a decent attack

Lara batted at 4 or 5 for most of his career. Opened right at the start, then worked his way down to 3, and then 4 and 5

Maybe a similar reasoning applies to Hope?

This experiment failed as Pooran batting at 3.....

This Hope at 4 ..... experiment start just between qualifiers 2023......both openers Charles,Mayers & King all failed....West Indies failed to qualify...

Now, Qualification 2027.....We presently at 10th....

If I was admin, one would have to play 4 day cricket as well as 50/50 cricket for selection to 50/50. The progression should be from 50/50 to test. See this working for the Ozzies

Only one iffy selection. I’m not convinced by Seales in LO cricket……not yet anyway.

This love for Mayers are opener....be it bowling or batting......despite failures qualifier in T20 in Australia or ODI qualifiers in Zimbabwe...
