Since I’ve been watching West Indies cricket, 1976 onwards. The premier bowler in the team does normally sets his field at the start of his bowling spell. If it goes wrong, then the captain intervenes and changes things. From Lance Gibbs, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding to Malcom Marshall right up to Kemar Roach to nowadays Mr Alzarri Joseph. He gat rights due to tradition.

In Alzarri Defence
Wow. That there is some big names but as they say in Sesame Street "One of these things is not like the others". All these others mentioned could tell the captain where are what length they were going to pitch the ball at.
I should add that test and white ball cricket are 2 different animals
In reply to Raggs
What about Alzarrie demonstrates that he knows about field setting and or bowling to a field.
Yes he had a few drops and mis-fields, but he also mis-fielded in the series too.
The team selects a cappo for a reason.
Any disagreements should have been communicated to cappo and VC in a quiet conversation.
Not demanding and gesticulating like a mad man in front of an international audience.
In reply to TanteMerle
AlJo get the most drops and midfield than any bowler on thr tram. The man must be vex. But I can see your angst toward the youth so anything he do he wrong in your eyes.
In reply to Raggs
not much of a defense Raggs.
a word to the wise is sufficient
In reply to Raggs
I hope alzarri didn’t think that because Viv did charge into a media center that charging off the field was appropriate behavior. That being said, bajan captains have a reputation for being conservative, reactionary and unimaginative: Holder, RTN and especially Kraigg Brathwaite are poster boys in this regard. Still that sort of behavior was unacceptable
In reply to Raggs
I.am with Alzahrri. What he did was unacceptable but I understand. I am taking bowlers catches but my catches always seem to get dropped..I want my field set a particular way, I can't get it even when I am vice captain. Too much disrespect so I can understand. He exploded
In reply to Raggs
I have been watching and playing cricket since 1957. When a team go out on the field, every fielder knows his fielding position, even road cricketers.
Are you saying that fielding positions are not discussed during the team meeting before the toss?
Dude, you have lost all credibility.
If I was CWI I would offer him counseling
In reply to Jumpstart
You were posting about Joseph, but somehow you have to include the 'reactionary and unimaginative" reference to Bajans.
I strongly suggest that you the same health professional as you requested of Joseph.

No yuh wrong. It come outta Walsh's mouth seh Ambrose top seeded him on a tactical move because of who he is in the team. At the time Walsh was the skipper. Ambrose picked his end of where he wanted to bowl when the team walked on the field of play. Walsh signed off the move. Top bowler gat rights and so we play we cricket even in we glory days.
Example 2 Malcom Marshall himself said Michael Holding gave him the new ball to open the attack once to concede the fact he is #1 bowler in the team now. At the time Clive Loyld was the skipper. Did the Big Cat block that move ? No he didn't.
In reply to Raggs
There is no defense
The man was wrong plain and simple it dont matter if hope is a good or imaginative captain or not you dont walk out on your team
In reply to Raggs
When did Ambrose pick his end? Was it on the field or in the dressing room during the team meeting?
I have yet to see a bowler decide on the field without discussing it with his captain.
In reply to Raggs
There is no defense. None. And no West Indian bowler over the last 10 years has the right to ask for any type of field, because they all lack consistency and are incapable of bowling to a set field or plan.
I like Alzarri but to me he needs counseling. We should not only be concerned about cricket but about life and his life. He needs help with his anger issues.
In reply to bobby
Let me ask you something? Do you know Alzharri personally?
In reply to voiceofreason
cricket is supposed to be one of his happiest undertakings and he always seem angry, could be some issues there!
Poor Hope. The field he set said to me, being the bowler, you are my premier strike bowler, I believe in you. Take me some wickets.
In reply to camos
That is how he is on the field of play! He is intense and competitive what is wrong with that? I hate to see players smiling up with the opposition. The Man come to play. Now if he was like that off the field then that is another story.
So Alzarri was a vice captain then stripped of this for what reason? Simply because he and the captain can’t drink tea together. How Brandon King get that position when out of form? Maybe cause him can work with Shai Hope better.
Ok so both guys don’t get on, so is it a power move by Shai Hope not to give his premier bowler the field he asked for in his opening spell? Just proving who’s boss?
Everybody throwing the Antiguan under the maroon bus when he most of all is dedicated to the cause on all format platforms. I certainly won’t be on that trip with most of you guys.
In reply to camos
CC.com long ago dubbed him 'screw face.' The joy players show when the team gets a wicket is missing from him. Such players must get with the program or be removed. A 2-game ban is a slap on the wrist. We shall see if his behavior improves on return.
In reply to tc1
But it’s the truth. Bajan captains are perpetually behind the 8 ball. Their tactics take the entire game to wake up. And I was referring to historically, not Hope’s captaincy in that game genius
In reply to openning
Yuh mean like when dodo brain holder was trying to get Jerome Taylor to bowl into the wind and holder ignored the dude in Australia 2015?
In reply to Jumpstart
It seems you have a problem with Barbados cricketers. You cannot go through life hating people who have done you no wrong.
People up ina de feelings cuz it happen to a Bajan captain.Alzarri is one of those who always give his all and all in every format for the maroons so I ain't gonna condemn him 100 percent for that incident.
Hope just had to give way to his needs as the top bowler in the line up and if it was proven wrong pull his idea and insert his then. If at that moment Alzarri carry on so then I'd fully go against the Antiguan. Mr Hope brought that incident on himself. The likes of Worrell and Loyld know how to avoid such nonsense.
In reply to Raggs
What is Alzarri excuse as a VC for leaving the field?
Viv would not have allowed him back.
Hooper disagreed with a selection and did not bowl the player.
The Players knew about field placement before leaving the pavilion. You wrote about what you read or heard without understanding.
All the discussions you wrote about happened before going out to the field.
Alzarri knew only one slip would have been in a play before leaving the dressing room, he just decided to go against what the team discussed.
In reply to Raggs
Bajans up in their feelings. But then again that ain’t a new thing
In reply to openning
Would not have had one slip in any form of the game he played in
In reply to openning
So if a bowler an experienced one sees something straight away that needs a change against the agreed plan from the dressing room in his opening over of the game he shouldn't demand it from the skipper? Wha' yuh talking 'bout? Yuh think is A1 robots outdeh on de park?
In reply to Raggs
A player can be upset, but he should never leave the field, without having a replacement.
It was leaving the field that got him the two-match suspension.
You don't get it, players get upset for various reasons, leaving the field as Alzarai is the reason he is not playing in the first two T20i matches.
In reply to openning
Yes he wrong about how he left de park but prior to that, Captain Hope could have cooled that incident down or infact avoided it all together. Give his premier bowler his field and see how it go and pull it if proven that Alzarri idea ain't cutting the mustard.
In reply to Raggs
You seem to think that the situation started on the field between Hope and Alzarri. The team left the Pavillon knowing the field setting, Alzarri lost the argument in the dressing room and brought it on-field like a spoiled brat.
In reply to openning
I’ve never heard alzarri openly complain about losing the vice captaincy. Whereas allyuh boy holder said it was difficult losing the test captaincy despite his obvious failure in the role
In reply to Jumpstart
I believe that you are correct that you never heard Aljo complain openly.
Many people said that he complained privately.
Many reputable sports reported who spoke to him personally.
One even said that Aljo said that a bowler is his own captain.
These are all on social media.
I am not confirming anything as I never spoke with Aljo.
In reply to Jumpstart
Dude, every poster knows my take on the captain role in cricket.
Can you name another team sport, where a captain makes all the decisions during a game?
