No Joke

One of the most remarkable coaching decisions in some time was kept so quiet that even some of Andy Murray’s confidants were taken aback when it was confirmed that he is returning to tennis as the coach of Novak Djokovic. Some would even have been forgiven for looking at the calendar to check that it wasn’t April 1.

It is hard to recall a coaching announcement that has elicited the level of shock and even bewilderment that was prominent in the tennis world on a Saturday afternoon in late November. While the concept of a “super coach” — the term for a high-profile former player who has turned to mentoring — is nothing new, it is unprecedented for former rivals like Murray and Djokovic to establish such a partnership.

I read an article listing the players who had collectively beaten (in competitive matches) Federer, Nadal and Djokovic (the Big Three) the most. Unsurprisingly, Murray as a member of the Big Four, was well out in front with 30. If memory serves, Wawrinka was in second place with 17.
