debut: 2/16/24

BATTING:

Motie 92 runs @ 23, HS 55
Warrican 85 runs @ 42, HS 36*
Brathwaite 84 runs @ 21, HS 52
Athanaze 67 runs @ 16, HS 55
Imlach 55 runs @ 13, HS 35
Sinclair 49 runs @ 12, HS 28
Hodge 40 runs @ 10, HS 21
Jangoo 30 runs @ 15, HS 30
Roach 29 runs @ 29, HS 25
Louis 25 runs @ 6, HS 13
Greaves 24 runs @ 6, HS 10
Seales 22 runs @ 22, HS 22
Carty 6 runs @ 3, HS 6

Through four innings on the difficult Multan surface, West Indies managed to record just three half centuries, one each for Athanaze, Motie and Brathwaite. That the top two run scorers are both bowlers, speaks of how the top and middle order failed to compete against the home side's spin attack on these testing wickets.

Bowling statistics to follow upon completion of the second and final test.

Yes, it looks like Warrican will top the bowling and batting averages this series, he did the same against South Africa some months ago. Not bad for a player whose selection was being questioned some months ago

Great returns . Selectors will get rewarded highly by the WICB. Dumb selections.

Post Pakistan's batting statistics too. Additionally provide the data on how many wickets fell on both sides in the first 15-20 overs of each innings.

Have lessons been learnt? Then we have achieved one goal. On to the next, winning a test match in Pakistan.

In reply to 4REALQUICKS Kindly share the Pakistan batting averages for proper context.

It is unfair to pass judgment on any of the batsmen based on these fixed pitches. Babar Aazam clearly the class Batsman of the lot has scores of 8, 5, 1, 31 that means he averages 9 runs for the series. No I did not s-t-u-t-t-e-r Babar Azam averaged 9.

I hope Pakistan lose and learn from this exercise.

But on a surface where some balls barely rose above the ankles, others turned square and some spat high, it is little surprise when players make decisions they normally wouldn't have on surfaces that do neither of those things early on in a Test.

Nonsense!

The first Test saw a higher degree of turn - not to mention inconsistent bounce - than either of the surfaces that played host to the last two England Tests, and the first day here was only a fraction lowe

Sensible post....and I agree completely. in context our team has done exceptionally well, I am elated that Pakistan strategy backfired on them, our spinners out bowled theirs and our batters out batted theirs
Well done to our team including the coaching staff
I hope they flog their detractors with their flowers

I hope Rutherford whispered in your ear that he wants to play against Australia. For me, he would get in right away if his 2024 form and temperament continue.

I agree that we cannot persist either with Louis (just not ready) or Hodge (just not consistent). Athanaze holds on by a fingernail because of his one score of note. However, we also note that he failed completely in the other 3 innings on pitches where 9, 10, jack were able at least to make double figures. Imlach did enough to continue in the squad. For me, Jangoo needs another good FC season to prove that 2024 was not a fluke as it was for Louis. Greaves also did nothing and his place is in grave danger (pun intended). Looking forward, we may have to play one only of Motie and Warrican against Australia plus the 3 quicks you suggest. I think also we need a decent allrounder and I am hoping that Shamar Springer has another good season with bat and ball to push himself forward with Sinclair as the alternative if a spinning allrounder is needed. Guyana has to bowl Sinclair this season. He scarcely bowls and for spinners, getting in those long overs helps hone your craft. Same with Walsh Jr who is basically a specialist fielder for Leewards whit Cornwall hogging all the bowling. If Walsh can get a good number of overs in this season, he may well be a revelation and give us another bowling option going forward. If so, he bats at #7 after Imlach. If Josh has a good season with the bat (and I suggest that he should leave someone else to do the glovework this FC season) then he may have a chance at a batting spot (your Rutherford spot). The opening spot will probably be the most interesting spot will be the opening spot. A good season by Campbell will make him the front runner yet again. I would also keep an eye on Boucher from Barbados. A good season from Phillip will again put him in the squad as back up paceman. Since Keemo does not appear to play red ball cricket anymore, there is really no competition for Phillip except maybe if Thorne has a stellar season (and please do not raise Aljo. He should stick to white ball cricket going forward)

It will be a shame if Motie is not selected to play against Australia given his heroics with the bat - which is what gave us the chance to win in the first place - to go with improving bowling performances (averages a respectable 27 with the ball).

I agree but will WI pitches allow 2 spinners to play? Also bearing in mind that Warrican ended up with more runs and better average than Motie with the bat as well. I am happy for both to play together with Seales, Shamar (if fit) and Roach. That would probably be the best bowling line up that we can offer with 4 out of the 5 able to get around 15-20 runs each most of the time. Perhaps this bowling together with Imlach, Brathwaite and 4 other batsmen who will have to pick themselves based on FC season and the A tour

Thank you my friend.

It was the kind of performance a bowler could only dream of. Warrican transformed his moderate test statistics into figures that now reflect a bowler of talent at work. I am pleased for him. He learned very quickly how the slower you bowl on those surfaces, the more trouble you pose for the batsmen. Outstanding performance by the left armer.

Updated career stats for West Indies current leading slow bowlers:

J.Warrican 19 matches, 73 wkts @ 27
G.Motie 11 matches, 35 wkts @ 27
K.Sinclair 4 matches, 9 wkts @ 42
