It's not so much the part that you focussed on, Andre, but worse the extra 'by' she put into it: "...but 'by' they, while their companions slept..." That makes it bad English and you mean she couldn't hear herself and catch it? Besides, Miss Ting was reading from a paper, to rass!

Hehehe - nuff fake English speakers in our region. Have you listened to cricket commentary recently?
Men een know third person singular from plural, but just like dis fake, dem come up with the mangled quotes and swear dem waxing lyrical.
