I’m not at all surprised, but I’m confused by how otherwise rational, level-headed people treat someone as despicable as Trump like he’s some kind of second coming.

In Trump's case the fear and closeness to power factors are way less attributable (in a 'free democracy''}. So, it could only be greed upon greed plus perceived commonality such as supremacy and hatred of 'the other'

This will get very interesting. Tariff Man is making an enemy of a guy who spent $200 million to help Tariff Man get elected, knows where the bodies are buried so to speak, has a bully pulpit called X, and can spend billions of his personal funds to get Republicans thrown out of the House and Senate. Let's see how many members of the House and Senate take sides in this fight. And let's see how many members of the House and Senate vote for Trump's Big Beautiful Bill if Musk threatens to give financial support to candidates who primary them.
Musk is threatening to start a 3rd political party now. I just voted in favor of a third party in Musk's poll on X

Don't put this past Elon as some effort to rebuild his Tesla customer base. He knows MAGA aint buying his electric cars and the only way he can sell more cars in this climate is to turn on Trump.

MAGA don't care about the 'big beautiful breakup'. They don't care if Trump was friends with Epstein or guilty of the of the same crimes as Epstein.
Musk was useful to Trump during the campaign. Spent millions of dollars to get Trump elected. Musk was useful in the early days of DOGE until he pissed off a lot of people.
Musk is not useful to Trump anymore. What MAGA do care about is that Trump validates their bigotry.

Trump has used and discarded many before, but never anyone with 300 billion dollars and a bully pulpit like X. It's not just Trump who should be concerned about a Musk split with MAGA. Every congressman and senator should be concerned as well.

Remember there was some story about Musk violating the terms of his student visa, which supposedly made him ineligible for naturalization. Nothing came of it then because he was shelling out his millions in buying votes for you know who.
