Belmont bloodbath: 3 killed, toddler escapes

Three men were gunned down in a brazen attack along Lange Street, Gonzales, Belmont, on Sunday evening, in what police have described as a targeted triple murder.
Among the deceased is 31-year-old Police Constable Davy Le Maitre of Upper Cocorite Terrace, Cocorite. Le Maitre, who was on suspension from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service at the time, was liming with four other men around 6:00 p.m. when a car pulled up and gunmen opened fire. The other two victims remained unidentified. All three were rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Just moments before the shooting, a toddler is seen running toward the group, before disappearing from view. Seconds later, a vehicle pulled up at the corner of Jubilee and Lange Street, and two suspects dressed in camouflage exited and began firing at the group.Five men scattered, three ran in one direction and were gunned down, while the other two managed to escape. A cat, also caught in the chaos, was seen sprinting along a wall and out of harm’s way.

Family says goodbye to Winston Rostant, 9 months after disappearance

AFTER months of anguish, unanswered questions and fading hope, the family of Winston Rostant of Point Fortin, who disappeared last October, was finally able to say their final farewell.
The long-awaited funeral came after recent DNA testing confirmed the identity of remains found in a remote area in St James, providing the family with the closure they had desperately sought.

Rostant’s family was contacted last month and told of the DNA match.

They collected his remains on June 16 and held a funeral at David Guide and Son Funeral Services, followed by a cremation at Belgroves Funeral Home in his community of Point Fortin.

81 murders since UNC in govt
‘Have patience’, urges Security Minister, as deadly violence continues...

Since the April 28 general election which saw the United National Congress (UNC) form the new Government, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded 81 murders, raising the total count for 2025 to 208 killings as of yesterday.
Though the total is lower than the 307 killings recorded up to the same period in 2024, the continued deadly violence in the country has raised concerns among national security experts, criminologists, and Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander. The minister is asking that citizens be patient as he has promised that Government will address the crime crisis.

The 81 deaths figure recorded this year is lower than the figure for the same period between April 28, 2024—when the murder toll was 179—and July 12, 2024—when the toll was 308—which results in 129 homicides.

As of April 28, there were 127 killings reported in this country.

Alexander: Crime fight underway, visible measures coming soon

Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says the government is actively working on plans to combat rising crime and gang violence in TT, promising that people will soon “see and not just hear” the results.Speaking on the Morning Edition programme on CCN TV6 on July 14, Alexander acknowledged a recent increase in crime, particularly as the school term comes to a close. He urged the public to support Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro, calling on people to give him a fair chance to lead the police service.

Alexander, who was appointed minister earlier this year, said government leaders are developing urgent crime-fighting policies. He assured people that change is imminent.“In the coming weeks, you will see and not just hear, but see what we are coming with,” Alexander said.Addressing the government’s pre-election promise to reduce crime within six months, Alexander said the reality of the situation required a major rebuilding effort.
“I know the population is waiting and wants to see immediate impact. But let me not throw the blame on anybody. What we met was an institution filled with emptiness, lack of vision and thoughts,” he said.

“So now we have to reconstruct nearly every institution under the national security apparatus. It takes time to do these things. When you think for a moment that you were going to jump into an immediate fight against crime and cause an immediate impact, on arrival, we met emptiness.”The former police officer said he had long spoken about the deficiencies within the system, including a lack of vehicles, human resources, and communications resources. He criticised the current state of the National Operations Centre (NOC).“This centre was created for a particular purpose but is not serving its purpose at this time,” Alexander said.

I’m also going soon; last year I breathed out when I got back on that plane. I have no proportionate perception of risk there.
