This should be a wake-up call for all Barbadian cricket fans.

About 25 years ago, a friend who had just returned to South Africa from Barbados as manager of a junior South Africa team told me that the standard of youth cricket and school cricket in Barbados was disappointingly low and that a decline in West Indies cricket would inevitably follow.

His prediction was spot on. A few years later, one of the coaches at the Shell Cricket Academy in Grenada complained bitterly about striking deficiencies in young players that the West Indies Cricket Board had sent to the Academy. He was concerned about the players’ understanding of the fundamentals of the game, their work ethic, fitness and technique, and their mental skills particularly concentration, self-discipline and self-motivation.

Ability is not enough
my reference for the ills of barbados cricket. this applies to cricket all over the region. the standard of the product is appalling

$ammy's supporters are now going to say that even the Bajans are getting their butts kicked (by the USA of all places), so don't put much weight on the $ammy led WI being rattled out for 27.

As you listen to the call-in shows, you'll think it's 1960 - no video, just radio.
The ignorance of some, who ask what Coach Sir Gary or other greats had.
One thing I learned from my sister in law is to practice.
She was a Juilliard scholar who gave me a tongue-lashing for asking her to play the piano after dinner, the first time she politely said, If you want me to play, let me know ahead so I can prepare, The next time I was taken outside away from the family, I got a professional lashing.
My two hobbies I pay for, golfing and dancing, my second wife paid thousands of dollars to be a Ballroom dancer, she was tough when we practiced.

You cannot practice 1/2 hour, 3-4 days a week and be a professional cricketer. Charlie Griffith used to practice every Sunday morning, bowling from 7 -11 at Pebble.
I remember going to Pebble and bowling my first ball. I never turned a ball that much. Charlie stopped me after, underhanded a ball, which turned into the ocean just like my ball, he said to me, Try moving it away from the ocean.

I never learned how to do it took hours of practice.
I have written about Seymour Nurse's preparation for Australia and Gordon Greenidge getting assistance from people he trusted.

As you watched Hope, Kraigg and others with the same flaws year after year, how many hours are these players putting in?
Who are their coaches,. And are the coaches coaching from a manual

On a trip to Bim about 10 years ago, I was staying by my gf family home on the west coast where I grew up and her lil nephew and niece were playing with a bat/ ball. I joined them and to my surprise the young girl was a much better cricketer than her brother who was 2 or 3 years older than her.

The second surprise was that during my visit I did not see any kids playing cricket in the villages.

I visited your club Empire for the first time 2 weeks ago and saw the past legends of Empire .While playing immediate cricket at CP we had 95 % of our games at home with the exception of the Ronald tree cup where we played home/ away.

USA juniors drawn from pool of 350 million Yanks and 1.5 billion Indians. Unlike track and field Yankee Indians are in top drawer of cricket in training, facilities, finance. Hard for poor small island populations to beat them at junior level. Senior level is more nuanced.

I did the same one summer when I was home, one Guyanese joined the six locals and me, all the youngsters were heavy set, none of them played for their schools, the only one who could bat and bowl was the Guyanese gentleman.
The worst I have seen is Roland Holder home on Vacation and Wicketkeeping in a 1st Division match. Carlyle was commentating that day, so I asked him about the young wicketkeepers at the club. his response was That's what our cricket is now.
Fifteen minutes later, I drove to friendship. I witnessed a Barbadian player cussing at an official.

A number of years ago when I lived in New York, we took an under fifteen team to North Carolina for a tournament. Fifteen of the sixteen youngsters were from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Am not the least bit surprised that the USA under 19 team destroyed a team from the Caribbean.

I was waiting for this game as I felt it was a good measure sadly it is has revealed that we are falling behind at the U19 level when our top team in region can be humbled so easily we got work to do.

On another note how come USA were allowed to field 2 teams, why are we helping to develop American cricket I rather allow one of our territories to field a second team than USA
Silly administrators

Our u19 has been failing for over 25 years and we continue to say how good we are at u19, we have won the cup once , and made the semi- final once during that period.

The most seminal post of the week. Everything else pales into insignificance.

Unless that and what happens at U17 and 15 gets fixed, NOTHING ELSE matters.

Agree we had a weak youth record and system. No present players can influence the youngsters.
Having a coaching certificate does not guarantee success.

I watched a Barbados squad playing a Dominica squad. I saw talent, wrote about it, VOR the enabler is happy with the proceeding.
There is room for every youngster; we may be seeing less than ten percent of the talent in the Windwards and Leewards.
