Today is set as an historic date in Jamaica with the two major political parties which have been in existence from the days of West Indian Federation, they will battle today for the Jamaican votes.

The incumbent JLP led by Dr. Andrew Holness has been credited with the drastic reduction of crime and violence in Jamaica, and also economic growth. While their challenger the PNP led by Mark Golding, Jamaican born of British parentage, which led to some controversy of him not holding a Jamaican passport until later in his life, however, the PNP supporters are excited and motivated, with the expectation to win the election, based on recent polls, showing the PNP with a narrow lead over the JLP.

So, the Jamaican Election Machinery is up and running, now it’s all up to the voters.
Who will win this election?

Jamaica is the first country in this hemisphere to grant Universal adult suffrage in Jamaica by the British colonial government in 1944, allowing all adult citizens to vote, regardless of sex or class. Long before United States and Canada.

Further Mark’s English born mother’s father was a Jamaican (Westmoreland) born doctor - his maternal grandma was Australian. MarkieG born at UWI hospital.

Mark a bawn Jamaican no doubt, while my cuz may have lost a few voters when he responded that not because Mark was born in JA, he is Jcan. A regrettable response so close to elections, not enough time to make amends.

PNP won all the debates, and won the polls but still lost the election??? Many are rationalizing that it was attributable to the mere 38% voter turnout, very shameful!!

The results of Jamaican election in a brief summary:
The ruling JLP government won the election and keep power but lost about 14 seats, will form government with a small majority.
The opposition party, PNP, will remain in opposition but with a 14 seats gain in parliament, they lost the election but will become more influential in parliament.

Westminster Parliamentary Democracy as adopted by most Caribbean islands is like an election winner takes it all, regarding formation of government, regardless of how close the election results between political parties.
