I remember that day very well as I was preparing to fly back to London to take a post-graduate exam.I was scheduled to fly out the Friday and the Hurricane was on the Monday and all flights were cancelled indefinitely.I was on one of the first flights out to Miami on the Saturday and I then got a flight from there to London.The exam was on the following Tuesday.

I did not lose my roof and only had damage to our otaheite apple tree.We ate pepper pot for three days since it needs no refrigeration.Interestinglyjust one year earlier Peter Tosh was shot dead in Kingston and brought to the University Hospital one Friday night in full cardiac arrest.

Tosh was shot on 9/11/87..I was at KFC in Liguanea with my fav M.D. when the news broke…We immediately headed up to UHWI just as he was being wheeled in…

The birth rate increased significantly after that, Gilbert!

I can never forget that day nor the three months after.

I was with two other Peters and Ali that evening when news broke. Will never forget it.

I recall visiting the Yard shortly after Gilbert.

That's when my father said, "Mek mi tell yuh sumting, Gilbert a never boy!

I was actually on call for Internal Medicine that evening and was in the ER when he and Free I were brought in.I did not take part in the attempted resuscitation but I was aware of what was going on.Free I was pronounced dead next morning in the ICU.That was a very traumatic evening for all of us who were there.

I think she was a matron at UHWI in the 80s…

Matron Dujon was also there around then. She was Jeff’s dad’s sister.

I absolutely remember Sister Cocking.I remember she had a hearing aid.I also remember Sister Burgess who had come back to Jamaica from England and there was also Sister Harris.They were the three senior Nurses who manned the Casualty Department.Those Nurses were top class.
The Matron was Dujon when I was there.
