ICE arrested the Superintendent of Des Moines, Iowa Public Schools, Dr. Ian Andre Roberts, who ICE says is an illegal alien from Guyana & and active ICE fugitive with a deportation order since May 2024. Fox is told Dr. Roberts fled from ICE agents in his car once they ID’d themselves as immigration agents, speeding away, then abandoning the car. He was found in a brushy area 200 yards away with the help of an Iowa State Police K9. Per ICE official, agents found a loaded gun, a “fixed blade hunting knife”, and $3,000 cash in Dr. Robert’s vehicle.

Per senior ICE official, Roberts first entered the U.S. in 1999 on a F-1 student visa at St. John’s University was ordered removed from the United States on May 22, 2024, with proceedings being held in absentia. On April 24, 2025, an Immigration Judge in Dallas, TX denied a Motion to Reopen his immigration case.

He's well prepared for any ill advised situation...

Guyanese Ian Roberts

It seemed like it should be an easy win for Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts to dust off his racing shoes and compete against a team of ele
The 47-year-old Guyanese runner's skills had taken him around the globe, after all, even competing in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

"I showed up to the school, and I'm waiting there. And I saw the principal and teachers and they brought the entire school out to the track. And I'm thinking, 'oh,'" Roberts recalled with a laugh.

Accomplished good looking man, all these years you never loved anyone enough to marry and legalize?

Blatant disregard for the laws of the land. Did not show for his immigration hearing.....knowing he would be seized even then....

Alot of non sense going on with ice raids...but people li,e this are the real problems!

Man like that could be a real asset in his Country but rather live in the US illegally!

Just ridiculous!

@Ayenmol

He did marry in 2017 but apparently he never lived with his wife: https://www.swflphotography.com/lenisha-ian-naples-bay-resort/

His "PhD in Urban Education Leadership" is from Trident University; a mail order diploma mill.

He was making over $300,000 USD as superintendent. Unlikely he could legitimately make that in Guyana. His base salary is $270,000 plus ""The district will provide him with a payment to a "tax-sheltered annuity" of 14% of his annual salary and $600 per month for a car allowance and reimbursement for "all in-district related travel," the contract states."

The entire story is looking more and more like an elaborate con job and a failure to do basic background checks.

I really don’t understand his situation, born in Guyana, competed at Olympics for Guyana, yet grew up or spent many years in Brooklyn, worked in many different states in US, yet applied for visa? In all his life living in the US with his substantial education, he never seek to regularized his US residency? With his successful career and lucrative job position, I know he would have been considered as a catch for many women in US. Something is missing, it’s not adding up!

“Roberts entered the US on a student visa in 1999, according to DHS.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Coppin State University in Maryland, according to his bio on the district website. At Coppin, where he was inducted this year to the sports hall of fame, Roberts was the college’s first men’s NCAA all-American in any sport. He was also the school’s first Olympic athlete.

Roberts later got master’s degrees from St. John’s University in New York and Georgetown University in Washington, according to his bio on the district website. He is married and enjoys hunting.”

Sounds like another good person that neglected the regularization rules.

More conflicting information from CNN:

“The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners issued Roberts a license to serve as superintendent in the state in July 2023, according to Norris.

On his application for the job, Roberts said he was a US citizen who was eligible to work in the district, Norris said at the board meeting Saturday.

Norris said the school district only recently learned of the final removal order for Roberts issued by a judge in 2024.

“We were not made aware of that fact, and that’s very concerning,” Norris said. “I want to be clear – no one here was aware of any citizenship or immigration issues that Dr. Roberts may have been facing.”

Roberts disclosed his weapon charge, related to a hunting rifle, when he was hired, a district spokesperson told CNN.

The superintendent was arrested as part of a “targeted enforcement operation” and fled after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers approached him, according to statements from DHS and the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

DHS said he was “in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a fixed blade hunting knife” at the time of his arrest. It’s a violation of federal law to own a firearm and ammunition if an individual doesn’t have legal status in the US.”

@Slipfeeler

An attorney on Twitter took a deep dive into his background. The amount of red flags she found makes me wonder how he got that far.

@ray

According to one of the protesters, he was targeted because he didn’t allow ICE access into the schools to after students who may have been undocumented!
All and all I think ICE is going way overboard in my opinion!
