PM: Modi's Prosthetics promise comes true
Jaipur Foot founder in T&T for opening of limb fitment camp...
More than 800 people, mostly from Trinidad and Tobago, will receive free prosthetic limbs from India over a period of 50 days.So said founder and chief patron of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) Jaipur Foot organisation Davendra Raj Mehta, during the inauguration of the Artificial Limb Fitment Camp in T&T at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, yesterday. He said amputees were the most distressed segment of societies.“Having lost their limbs, they lost their mobility, they lost their dignity, they lost their income and they lost their social respect...,” he said.
He said his foundation’s mission is to provide artificial limbs to help people.“This is what is humanitarian, this is what is universalism. All our brothers, all our sisters, they are in trouble, we have to help them,” said Mehta.Speaking on the cost of prosthetic limbs, he said that in the United States a prosthetic leg costs US$10,000, but his foundation produces and supplies the jewpudhni prosthetic leg at a cost of US$30.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in her address, recalled that the camp was one of India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledges to T&T during his recent visit. She said: “Just three months later, that promise has taken root in Trinidad and Tobago, with containers of lightweight prosthetic limbs shipped from Jaipur.”Rajpurohit said that following discussions with Mehta and other officials yesterday, it was agreed they will set up a permanent centre for limb fitment in T&T.He said part of that plan included sending people from T&T to get training as technicians in India, as well as bringing some of the technicians here.“This centre probably could work for the entire region, so that people can come here and avail themselves of this facility from all over the region,” he suggested.
