PM: Modi's Prosthetics promise comes true
Jaipur Foot founder in T&T for opening of limb fitment camp...

More than 800 people, mostly from Trinidad and Tobago, will receive free prosthetic limbs from India over a period of 50 days.So said founder and chief patron of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) Jaipur Foot organisation Davendra Raj Mehta, during the inauguration of the Artificial Limb Fitment Camp in T&T at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, yesterday. He said amputees were the most distressed segment of societies.“Having lost their limbs, they lost their mobility, they lost their dignity, they lost their income and they lost their social respect...,” he said.

He said his foundation’s mission is to provide artificial limbs to help people.“This is what is humanitarian, this is what is universalism. All our brothers, all our sisters, they are in trouble, we have to help them,” said Mehta.Speaking on the cost of prosthetic limbs, he said that in the United States a prosthetic leg costs US$10,000, but his foundation produces and supplies the jewpudhni prosthetic leg at a cost of US$30.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in her address, recalled that the camp was one of India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledges to T&T during his recent visit. She said: “Just three months later, that promise has taken root in Trinidad and Tobago, with containers of lightweight prosthetic limbs shipped from Jaipur.”Rajpurohit said that following discussions with Mehta and other officials yesterday, it was agreed they will set up a permanent centre for limb fitment in T&T.He said part of that plan included sending people from T&T to get training as technicians in India, as well as bringing some of the technicians here.“This centre probably could work for the entire region, so that people can come here and avail themselves of this facility from all over the region,” he suggested.

This is terrible that Kamla would accept $30 legs for ‘free’; nothing is free; higher standards I guess.

Zero ideas

2025 and Trinidad and Tobago believes a Jaipur Foot is what their amputees need.

Ministry of Health reports 350-400 lower-limb amputations each year, mostly due to diabetes and road-traffic injuries.

“With one in six adults living with diabetes in TT, the second-highest rate in the Americas, too often, a small foot wound spirals into the loss of a limb. The economic toll is severe, as a single amputation can reduce a household’s income by 20-40 per cent, while a prosthetic limb costs $15,000–$40,000, far beyond the reach of most families.”“Only yesterday they were fitted with new limbs and they were already walking. There is hope, as eight in ten amputees fitted with a quality prosthesis regain basic mobility and one in two returns to work or school within a year.

“The camp has already been over-subscribed, as we have 800 beneficiaries but the number registered with us is more than 800 and we are in the process of accommodating to the extent possible the maximum names. We are already slotted potential beneficiaries from across the country, some are coming from far-flung areas.“They are among the most distressed segment of the population, having lost their limbs, they lost their mobility, they lost an income, and they lost their social respect. They suffered not from one but from four disabilities, psychological also included.

Which other countries sharing in this?
What is the UNC plan for the 400/yr amputees ( not all legs) after Modi’s 50 day, 800 x $30 foot lottery?
