Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who previously welcomed the US’ actions and praised its killings of alleged drug-traffickers, in September indicated that at least 200 Venezuelans stationed in the nation's prisons would be deported. She then claimed that this process was, however, being stalled by the Venezuelan government.
“The Venezuelan authorities are refusing to take back their people. We have fulfilled all our obligations to repatriate them to Venezuela. It’s costing us $3 million a month to keep them detained. Money that can be used elsewhere to benefit Trinidadians,” she said.
Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, the memo read, instructed that all illegal immigrants detained are to be held at the immigration Detention Centre, without being placed on Orders of Supervision- documentation that would allow them to remain in the country under specific circumstances. The policy dated October 27 took immediate effect and will remain in force until further instructions, it stated.
