Greame Thomas was before Gillespie

@FuzzyWuzzy

Grahame Thomas who toured WI in 1965 with Bob Simpson's team traces ethnicity to North American

Indian and not indigenous Australian Aborigine.

We all were told he was the latter in 1965 but have since been proven to be in error not of our making.

So Gillespie was the first of that lot.

Did the Aussie not boycotted a tour by the apartheid South Africia team to Australia because of Thomas.

Not that I recall. There was talk that SA would not accept him on the 1966-67 tour by the Aussies.,

But he was named and played tour matches including a One day International. But he did not

make many runs in side matches and the Aussie relied on Lawry,Simpson Ian Chappell, Stackpole,Cowper and Redpath for their batting but were beaten 3-1 in the 5 Test series.

That was the series the Doug Walters missed because of military call up.When he returned, Thomas

was not able to get into the team either.

He was not able to make the 1969-70 tour, South Africa's last when they defeated the Aussies 4-0 in four

Test series. Their return trip in 1971-72 to Australia was cancelled and replaced by a World Eleven led by Sobers and had nothing to with Thomas.

Thomas was an elegant batter even on his initial tour to the West Indies with Simpson but made less than 200 runs in all 5 tests he played.

BTW, I think OZ gonna surprise the over confident England in the Ashes

that will be underway soon.
