A no win for everyone

when we misuse social media. The smart phone and Social media are like loaded guns, and easy to discharge by any idiot who can pull a trigger. Unfortunately, not all who pull triggers are good shooters. Social media is a danger to the world, and it is important that those of us who know better, take up the responsibility of coaching those whom we have influence upon. A lot of folks use social media to hurt people; to destroy others.

It is even worse in politics, and where those in opposition see no problem in using it to spread lies, misinformation, disinformation, besmirching. When and if you win, it will come back to bite you, because the same tools would be used against you. Now, as the backlash is occurring, suddenly you are the moral authority over how social media should be used. It does not work so; we have to be consistent to be taken seriously. This is what some of us were concerned about for so long, because we were concerned about the damage it would inflict upon everyone. Misuse of social media can destroy us if cool heads in authority do not prevail.

It is unfortunate now that suddenly, as the backlash is having its effects, the hypocrisy of moral authority surfaces. Worst of all, a house slave is loud in trying to call on the USA to take beack the visas of all their nationals who criticize them on social media. They want to silence everybody now. But do like MTG, apologia for your shortsightedness..

@Besar

Ironically these have been some of the worst abusers on social media. Have you perused the Facebook pages of the dailies recently?

Every political article is swarmed by the hundreds with bots and paid trolls, especially when certain key words are the subject of the article. You will consistently find Fake profiles portending to be of another race, attempting the deception that the swarm is not race-based. Meanwhile the majority of the others denigrating the "opposing" race. ("All of them stupid and poor") Often, the same wording is used by many different identities (they were given the same script) and they share the same facebook friends.

This is Kirk Meighoo and his Cambrige Analytica playbook.

Unsurprisingly he has a couple disciples on these fora, guess who !

Hint: We stopped receiving daily reports on crime in TnT since elections in April. 😀

In relation to UNC trying to clamp down on social media commentary the following opinion is so true:

Mr Alexander has to recognise that we, the citizens, are forced to seek information externally because of the lack of proper communication by his Government.

The irony of it is that this is coming from a minister whose Government used their minority in Opposition to stop laws; they engaged and hired social media and so-called social media influencers to spread their opinion and narratives about media, the judiciary, the former government, the business sector, the police, State boards, and citizens who offered themselves for service, et al.
Now that they are in Government, they have to deal with the fire they started, which is now a raging wildfire, while doing a job they were never prepared to do. The UNC has by far the largest social media presence among all political parties in the country, with hundreds of followers posting and reposting in their support daily.

The United States Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago says all decisions about visas rest solely with the United States government and not with any foreign authority.But in a post on its Facebook page yesterday, the US Embassy in Port-of-Spain said Washington controls all approvals, denials, and revocations, adding that no foreign government plays any role in the process.It stressed that the United States does not revoke visas because someone exercises their right to free expression, which it described as a “cornerstone value of our country.”However, the US Embassy said American visas can be denied or revoked based on criminal activity.

The development follows comments made by Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, who said he would be enlisting the US Embassy’s support to counter US-based social media actors, some of whom hold dual citizenship, and whom he claims are spreading propaganda and fear in Trinidad and Tobago.
