Here is a little know fact about Rohan Kanhai. He was arguably the most consistent West Indian Batsman in our history. He played in 17 test series and averaged over 40 in 13 of them.

He averaged less than 30 in his first and last test series and in his second test series at age 22 he averaged 37. The only other time he averaged less than 40 was in Australia when he had a knee injury and he averaged 37.Immediately after that series he had knee surgery and thus missed the New Zealand tour in 1969.Batting at the # 3 position in 90 innings he averaged 52.69 with only a single not out. When one considers how frequently he was in very early due to the repeated failures of Conrad Hunte's opening partners that was quite a feat for such an attacking batsman. He was equally adept against pace and spin.He mastered Gupte in India with a masterful 256 in 1958-9 and later on a rampant Denis Lillee in 1971 at PERTH was tamed with a classy 118.Lillee took 12 wickets for 92 runs in that match and bowled out the world team for 59 runs.As a matter of fact that Innings is cited by Gavaskar who played in that match as the Innings that convinced him that Kanhai was a once in a lifetime batsman and the best batsman of Indian origin he had ever seen.

Anyone who loves and studies cricket must know of Kanhai, a true batting genius. Just shows that statistics are not everything.

As a child growing up he was definitely one of my heroes, those were the days when you are happy to see certain batsmen at the crease and never nervous about them losing their wickets early or their batting performances. The days when bowlers were afraid to face certain West Indies batsmen, including Kanhai.

Who is better and why?

....

I never had the grand privilege of seeing him play cricket firsthand; no, I had to settle for the glowing accounts of sports columnists who practically turned his every inning into poetry.

But when I take a look at the lineup of shared trophies that CWI battles for across the cricketing world, his name is conspicuously absent. Not a single cup, shield, or vaguely shiny object bears his name. And yet, the accolades? Oh, they keep flowing like runs on a flat pitch.

I even went as far as writing to a CWI president, a bold move, I know, to ask why such an honour had never been considered. Shockingly, no reply. Perhaps my letter got lost in the archives of “questions we’ll never answer.”

At this point, I can’t help but wonder if the oversight has less to do with his record and more to do with… well, his hair being just a touch too straight for comfort.

Statisticly Tiger... who at times carried the batting on his back an was mighty difficult to dismiss so would give him the edge.
