What I can is she has fallen into the Trump's trap, and one has to wonder what is it that she and/or her family have to protect in the USA, causing her so willingly to accept the American offer.
Is all of this being done more in the interest of the people of Trinidad or in her personal interest?
The Americans would never have asked Mia to accept their military. Behind the scene, among others, their ambassador would have conveyed the Bajans independent streak.
As the late former Prime Minister of Barbados, Errol Barrow, said in two famous quotes:
- “We will be friends of all, satellites of none.”
- “We shall not involve ourselves in sterile ideological wrangling because we are exponents not of the diplomacy of power but of the diplomacy of peace and prosperity.”
Every Barbadian prime minister since then, irrespective of party or their politics, have adhered to these founding principles.
Trump has turned diplomacy, economics and finance, peace and war into one global mess, and has now turned to bring that mess more prominently into the eastern Caribbean.
