I agree it is terrible. You have to give the batsmen a target for themselves instead of just trying to block out a day. No one just practices blocking against test bowlers.

AB amla and co deployed this strategy on a couple of occasions. I think they still lost but it’s been done before by other teams, and more accomplished batsmen
our batsmen lacked the skills to just block all day.
