I’ve been a long-time Chapelle fan, but his last few specials, aside from a handful of one-liners, have been pretty unfunny, even bad. Lately he comes off more like a preachy podcaster than a standup comedian. These days, he’s rarely funny.

I’m gonna give him a break. Maybe one of these years he’ll get back to actual standup and step off the soap box. I dunno if he even knows the difference between a TED Talk and standup anymore.

I watched it with my wife, who was also a fan, and she felt he was disrespecting the audience and himself by chain-smoking weed on stage.

Keep going Dave. You dropped another gem that is going over smooth brained heads...once again!

Back in my day, stand-up was required to be funny. Otherwise GTFO. It was the main thing, not a bonus featurette.

With Chappelle lately, it feels more like Ted Talk lectures with minimal jokes sprinkled in. Once I took the hero-worship blinkers off and actually waited for laughs, they rarely came. He is still charismatic and knows how to hold a room, but the material itself feels thin, underdeveloped and not particularly funny.

They feel more like ego-driven monologues than comedy sets. Fame, reputation AND weed clearly gives him the freedom to ramble pointlessly. And ramble he does.

Take away his legend status and maybe you will see, as I do, a washed-up shadow living off his glory days. Who knows. Maybe those days will return, and if they do, I will be first to rejoin the hero-worship line.

Meanwhile I’ll dust off my Chappelle show DVDs and rewatch. Err. I no longer have DVD player so youtube it is.

#cocaine is a helluva drug.

VIX I am a big fan of DC and I agree with you this one was not funny. His story telling, misdirection and set ups are legendary. He said he was going to present two different closes and I must have missed it.

It went over my head as well. And I am fine with that. I have seen his work from small comedy clubs to netflix specials and this was by far the least enjoyable. There were moments but these moments were far and few. But in the immortal words of DC "Good people of Detroit, you will never get your f******* money back"

@Halliwell

I’m not anti-trans or anti-gay, but I am anti being pressured into treating their lifestyle like something I should endlessly celebrate or advocate for.

Like how the rabid left-wing freaks command their delusional, brainwashed misfits here to do.

@nick2020

If you think it went over your head, you're giving him too much credit. There was no hidden genius, just empty rambling. His diehard fans will pander to it, but they know that the latest special and most of the other recent ones were just special crap.

I tell people the same thing when they say a movie was great but that they did not understand it. If you did not understand it, the movie was crap. No difference here.

Where entertainment is concerned, your opinion is the only one that should matter to you

@VIX

JahJah said it went over my head. I am a diehard fan of Chappelle. But this one was not good.

I will just pretend it never happened.

@nick2020

you're giving celebrity obsessed zsa zsa too much credit.

Poor guy just saw a celebrity thread and began clapping like a deranged circus seal. I dunno who worse between him and his boyfriend stupidjones.

@VIX

totally agree on the trans thing now the actual show chappelle has evolved more into the george carlin type of comedian than what he was earlier in his career which was influenced by richard pryor, redd foxx and eddie murphy i think he said.

@VIX

Cool, I get your meaning

@Halliwell

@velo

The best part of DC stand-up was acknowledging Charlie Barnett as the funniest comedian he every saw. I totally agreed with him.Saw Charlie in WSP and in Wall Street he was just funny.

Maybe he deliberately intended for it to be more commentary than comedy.

Maybe that’s how he wants the rest of his career to be defined.

If so, then it wasn’t bad.

Plus, it sounded like a dire warning that he knows they’re after him.
