Dwayne Bravo: ‘They had different plans and different ideas’

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo says the decision to end his Test career at the age of 27 was not his. Bravo’s last appearance in the format came in a rained-out contest in Pallekele in 2010. Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket Podcast, the Trinbagonian said, contrary to assumptions, he had “made it very clear” he wanted to continue his Test journey.

“No, I didn't decide to give up Test cricket; [the board] decided to give me up,” he clarified. Bravo, who is the current Trinbago Knight Riders coach, says he attributes part of the blame to his current deputy at the Caribbean Premier League side, Ottis Gibson, who was Windies head coach at the time.

“My assistant coach, Ottis, is the guy who was the coach for the West Indies team back then when my Test career came to an abrupt end. Now I still give him the s--- about it.”

He, however, absolved then-skipper Darren Sammy of any guilt. “I didn't think it had anything to do with Sammy, because I think at that time, Sammy was a young captain, so he didn't have much influence or much say over what team was selected,” Bravo said, emphasizing that Gibson, as the head coach, did.

Holding from 2011-12. mentioned seeing Bravo at plane side leaving after a white ball series and asked "where are you going?" Bravo answered, "They say they don't need me" Yet men will come here and talk about mercenaries and undermining.

@Brerzerk

It should be expected you'd drink Bravo's kool-aid or it is the home bias?

The superb irony is that Bravo with a batting average of 31.5 after 40 tests comfortably outbats all of the WI current top 6 batsmen including those in whom the selectors seem totally vested to the destruction of the career of the other Bravo who had an even better test average.

From the time WICB appointed Darren Sammy as WI test captain, Dwayne Bravo’s test career was effectively over as long as Sammy was captain.

Sammy was appointed test captain in October 2010. Bravo played 1 more series in Sri Lanka in Nov / Dec 2010. And that was it.

West Indies weren’t going to play 2 players who performed the same role. The captain has to play and Bravo was the collateral damage.

He knew it. Sammy knew it. The Board knew it. Otis as head coach knew it. EVERYONE knew it.

Anyone saying anything else just talkin out dey ass.

A group of players refused to sign central contract..... that's the beginning of end of test career...

Further, Sammy appointment as captain by CWI....nail in coffin...

Bravo the Champion... enjoyed his days under sun.....won trophies...earn very good livelihood....sing Champion...

Why have grudges....you did ..best for you...CWI had faith in Sammy....

It's like Pooran...time and again justifying his international retirement...then after 10 years from now .....CWI destroyed my maroon career...

Chill....

And to answer Bravo., nobody destroyed his test career. Unironnically we all know that it allowed him to become a T20 great.

Sammy Bravo and the other Jamacian all-rounder (I forgot his name now) were who were trending for the role at the time. Sammy was appointed when incumbents including Bravo refused representing WI and signing contracts was it? Excuse me if my details are fuzzy.

And to the Bravo lackeys, we all understand that with Sammy appointed captain Bravo couldn't slot back in that role. Sammy had cemented his place based on performance.

While some here initimate that Sammy undeservingly got the captaincy, it was at the time when only struggling Darren Ganga was the alternative and that another story.

And to counter the argument recall that thanks to BCLara, Bravo got a 'opportunities' he had in tests. I don't blame him. Why so many begrudge Sammy for getting his bly - like Bravo?

West Indies has won 5 international championship titles

1975 50 over World Cup

1979 50 over World Cup

2004 ICC Champions Trophy

2012 T20 World Cup

2016 T20 World Cup

Dwayne Bravo Jr and Chris Gayle are the only 2 players in West Indies history to have 3 International Championship Titles to their name.

Hate all allyuh want, they can't take that from them.

The two could have played together as based on their stats Bravo was more a batting allrounder than a bowling allrounder like Sammy. Bravo just never heeded Lra's warning to focus on his batting which he saw as his strength. His batting deteriorated where he averaged 21 in 11 innings after the 104 vs Oz. iw would not even talk about his bowling where he averaged 39.89. That is the real reason why he was dropped.

That is the problem with Prima donnas they have a sense of entitlement and are not willing to take any responsibility for their failures.
