"Would have done..." in Tittieland...

Tue, Feb 17, '26 at 7:52 AM

I was watching lot of the Trinidad Carnival festivities on TV over the weekend here in the USA. One thing that stood out to me is that the Trini commentators love to use the passive voice, as in, "He/she WOULD HAVE done..." or "You WOULD HAVE seen.." as in "You would have seen...so and so singer performing their song for Soca Monarch...". The this is i WAS watching and I DID see the singer perform...

Now I see even the express getting into the act. Quoting Alexander...

Appearing exasperated, he then said: 'The police would have done everything in their power to try and stop some of these things, but they cannot be in every place at the same time. We are hoping that persons are...responsible enough... to govern themselves-and that is not happening.'

Well did they or didnt they?

What is going on there in Tittieland with this "would have" business? It hurts mih ears....😀😀😀

@Larr Pullo

😀

You are 100% correct.

The passive voice is rampant in TnT.

I think it comes from primary school education. Everyone uses it. All levels. Its a decades-long epidemic.
