HOPE....should he stay or should he go??

As we know all good players don't always make good captains an Hope falls into that category....he just doesn't have a captains instinct or luck ....dey seh at times it's better to be lucky than good ...well he certainly aint lucky having lost 22 of the last 28 tosses including 6 of 7 in the tourny ...admittedly the match had gone (7 runs required)when he gave Shep the last over but Forde who was outstanding during the tourny had 1 over left why didn't he give it to him....was it to protect his homeboy figures an not have the winning runs scored off him ...admittedly its a relative non-issue but it smacked of a hint of insularity.....so would love to see him replaced by Hetty who obviously has a captaincy pedigree an reckon it would help to elevate his game to another level not withstanding how good he was in the tourny!!

@CCW

IMO Hope is lost. He must go as captain. He should be retained as a player. Hetty should be appointed Captain of the white ball teams.

Hope will stay as Captain. Hetmeyer needs time still to develop in that pivotal # 3 role.

@voiceofreason

Probably will stay just fuh continuity but he shouldn't....a good captain is worth his weight in gold an perhaps can give you an extra 10% better chance of winning ....Powell was a better captain than Hope though not saying they should go back to him but Hope just ain't got it much the same as Lara ....we need to maximise every position to progress an making Hetty captain would be a great start he has the pedigree an the nous!

@CCW

I was with you until you brought the inuslarity nonsense. Imho you are projecting when you default to insularity arguments. Ford has been very effective with the new ball . He is generally of little value thereafter.

In my most balanced team i would not even have had Shepherd. I had predicted that his 5fer would cost us in the end. But with 7 runs to win it would take at minimum of a hattrick to stop India. So why would you not go for the Hail Mary move and go with the bowler who had the sole hat trick in the tourney?

That said, I would love to see Rovman Powell restored as captain. Tactically Hope was ok but captaincy is also about temperament. Yesterday with the ill-advised decision to drop King and open with Chase, Hope mentally conditioned himself to be the hitter. He was swinging hard and finding fielders and mistiming the ball......not his game. Chase acquitted himself well....with Bumrah held back, this was no surprise to me... but neither batsman was dominant enough to force Bumrah to be exposed earlier. It was a mistake to experiment with a change in the opening pair in this big match but as captain, it was disappointing to see how poorly Hope coped with the pressure the change caused

@CCW

Heard it from good source, that you stick to Sammy's game plan or you are fired. So I will not be too hard on Hope. The pressure of a must win got to him, he is a bright boy and this should argue well for the future.

@Logic

Ok point taken regarding insularity,as ive alluded it's a relative non-story but I've been around this game a long so not forced ripe or was born in the lickit era...when a captain in a test match is a few runs away from an inevitable defeat he invariably throws the ball to a non-bowler fuh the most part to complete the task cos none of yuh main bowlers invariably wants to bowl at that point an i think there was element of that yesterday ....Forde was the most economical bowler yesterday (3-0-22-0) ave 7.33...don't get it twisted I'm not saying it would have made difference but his homeboy captain looked after him an protected his nice analysis an threw the ball to Shep....IF you are totally dismissive of such a notion then you haven't been around the game long cos it happens.....just saying!!

Yesterday with the ill-advised decision

How was the decision ill-advised?

Mon, Mar 2, '26 at 11:51 AM

@CCW

Forde rarely bowls, at the death, while Shepherd has done so with regularity. Should Forde have been bowled out , yes. I would have bowled him the four straight and Motie should have been bowled out as well.

Nothing to do with insularity. Just the Captain messed up. Let us move on.

Mon, Mar 2, '26 at 12:32 PM

@CCW

When i say Shepherd 5fer would cost us long term I am saying i think he IS a non-bowler. Most of the time Shepherd cannot be trusted to bowl more than one or two overs.

Our bowling line up is not very strong but for every other bowler in the team there are times, conditions or match ups in which they will thrive. Forde will benefit from swimg and seam. Akeal will benefit from swing and spin. Motie from spin and slow wickets. Chase from spin, bounce and left handers. Joseph from seam and pace. Holder will benefit from bounce and seam and also from old ball on a slow wicket. Shepherd provides no predictable advantage. He does not complement what is an ordinary bowling unit. Very occasionally he gets it right but i would more trust Rutherford to give us one or two tidy overs.

Shepherd can hit the ball far places but i felt this team had enough hitters down the order.....I dont remember Motie batting once.

Mentioning poor Hope while not a peep about coaching staff????

Mon, Mar 2, '26 at 2:13 PM

@voiceofreason

my point about Shep an Forde has gone over yuh head but no big deal but i know what I'm saying ...on a positive note we seemed to have tremendous team spirit the best i can remember an boss man gotta some credit fuh dat....an in the campaign overall i reckon he's banked enough credits to call off the dawgs ....fuh now!!😎

Hope is still learning on the job, it hard for any WI captain to win consistently when most of the players on the team are inconsistent.

Tue, Mar 3, '26 at 8:00 AM

@CCW

There is probably no bigger Hope fan than me.

I say that it is time for Hope to resign as cappo.

If not, make Hetty VC and groom him for a series or 2 to take over.

I will like to see if Hetty is as committed as he said.

King as VC does not sit well for a replacement.

If Hope stays for another series (2 max).

We can see if VC Hetty (reborn) is for real.

Hope, I am very disappointed with your captaincy.

You are just a Scammy lapdog.

Powell was a captaincy genius, who defied Scammy successfully.

but that ship has sailed and the only re-creation is for Scammy to go.

If Scammy goes, than Powell can return to cappo.

CWI has continually dug a big hole.

When we thing that they g-have reach the bottom, they continue to dig.
