I am surprised at Prof Devonoish's take.
From as early as the 1660's history records that thousands of Irish went to JA. DNA will show they are the 2nd largest ethnic bloodline in Yard, not Jewish, not Indian, not Chinese or Middle-Easterners all of who "mixed" less consensually or forcibly.
Accents can develop over much shorter time periods so 1800's Irish arrivals could influence The Caribbean accent as much as The Scots and specific parts of England as Dr. Devonish suggests.
It is interesting that up to today there are Gullahs (who live on islands off IS southeast coast) who sound exactly like us). Bajan planters who 1st settled the Carolinas took their slaves along with some from JA and Bahamas with them hence... I wonder if Prof. Devonish ever read Benjamin McMahon's auto-bio from early 1800's Jamaica perspective.
It is also about 'Daddy' Sam Sharpe's uprising.
