A suspect is dead after ramming a vehicle into a Detroit-area synagogue today, Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. The incident happened at Temple Israel, which includes an early childcare center and school, in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

• Emergency responders found what appeared to be a large amount of explosives in the back of the vehicle, according to law enforcement officials briefed on the scene.

• After the vehicle hit the building, security opened gunfire, killing the suspect, Bouchard said. One security guard was hit by the vehicle but is expected to recover, the sheriff said.

• Against the backdrop of wars in the Middle East, antisemitism has surged globally, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The incident in Michigan comes amid a succession of attacks on members of the Jewish community in the US, and Jewish institutions such as synagogues and schools have implemented tighter security systems.

All attacks on innocent people are wrong, but sometimes violent crimes and hate do happen because of what is interpreted as a wrong. The attacker on the Jewish center in Michigan had relatives who were killed in Lebanon recently by Israeli bombs, so it seems his act is more like a revenge act and not necessary an act of antisemitism. However, it is interesting that the recent rise in antisemitism worldwide has happened at the same time while Israel has committed a genocide and bombed Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and Iran. Could that be the reason that is triggering it?
