Alvin Kallicharran home to promote book

Thu, Mar 19, '26 at 3:11 PM

For a generation of cricket fans, the name Alvin Kallicharran conjures images of effortless grace, a flashing blade, and the poise of a giant in a small frame. A legendary former West Indies and Guyana captain, “Kalli” defined the golden era of the 1970s with a batting technique that was as elegant as it was lethal. But today, the man who once dominated the world’s cricket pitches is on home soil for a different kind of innings—one focused on the future of Guyana’s youth.

I was a big fan of Alvin; and as a Kid I had his name written on my Bat.

Wonder if there will be any mention in his book (needs to be) about he amongst others who embarked on a rebel tour of South Africa whilst Nelson Mandela was banged up for 20years ....an how it felt to be called an "honorary white" in allowing them for eg to sit at the front of the train where only whites was allowed to sit...i believe Lawrence Rowe has since apologised...wonder if Kalli will or has!!😎

Am not sure. I That tour should have never happened, but i think he did it at the end of his career.

@velo

I'm not surprised in regards to the Bajans....when Forbes Burham refused Robin Jackman entry into Guyana because of his SA links an the English supported him(Jackman) an as a result the planned test was subsequently cancelled ...guess who sucked up to the English an said they would step in an host the test ...yep Barbados!!....remember the party line at the time "politics should be kept out of sport" ...an we are cricketers not politicians an should be free to ply our trade wherever we choose..... I guess that translated at the time in SA at not being too bothered if they were regarded as " honorary whites"....f**king dotish low down gutter rats.....but biggup Sir Viv an Mikey Holding amongst others who said no amount of kruggerands could buy them!!😎....btw will try an meet Kalli on his travels in Gt an politely ask him if he has or intends to apologise.....if somehow he does that will be great but still won't buy his book!!!😀

Perhaps having endured the Burnham era helped Alvin to handle it. Who knows?
