Brian Lara wanted 1 million for IPL
@brians_da_best
I thought he and Kapil were blacklisted because they engaged a rival t20 league
but at the time for a name like that, and if the story is true, his brand was worth at least a mil
@Halliwell
We have to be on our toes, the amount of fake news spewing around.
@brians_da_best
I have never heard of this story and lara was in the ICL in 2007. retired in 2007 and suffered a fractured forearm in early january 2008 playing for Trinidad(january 7th to be exact)so that would have ruled him out of even the auction that year which was held on the 24th of january. Indian sports media, in is current dispensation, has a proclivity for fake news and jingoism that is broadcasted no matter how fanciful it sounds.
Don't know if he wanted a million,but it appeared to me that before that offer was rejected, he was all over Town probably in an effort to influence the powers that be by saying that Tendulkar was the best batsman in the World at that time.
@brians_da_best
At that time his brand would have worth 1M… he was like Tiger 🐅 was for Golf…
@Erlaboo1992
again, no evidence to corroborate that. the ipl only came about because
- 1) the icc saw the ICL, a sanctioned league as an existential threat as it had already attracted the likes of chris cairns, Damien Martyn, Abdul Razzaq, Inzamam-ul-Haq in addition to lara himself.
- it was a hurry done thing which was launched during the 2007 WT20
- Lara could not have known how successful the IPL would have been because the BCCI had an awful reputation at organization, even in 2007. the eden garden riots at WC1996, The riots that caused two matches to be abandoned during the 2002 ODI series between India and the WI, the scandals from the 2006 icc champions trophy which nearly resulted in a war between the icc and the BCCI over sponsorship......among other things. it could well be that he thought a private enterprise had a better chance of success and possibly there would be a resolution between the ICL rebels and the ICC, similar to what happened with WSC and the ACB.
Lara intended to fulfil his ICL contract in 2008 and only pulled out when he his forearm was fractured by lionel baker. Up until this point, no one knew how successful the IPL would be because it was the inaugural season and the BCCI had a poor rep when coming to organization
