...while we are struggling in the cricket doldrume for over 35 years Ian Bishop has become the best cricket commentor in the world.

It shows what can be achieved when you put in the hard yards.

I solicited some help from AI and it mirrors my thoughts:Ian Bishop is widely regarded by fans and peers as the "gold standard" of modern cricket commentary, often rated among the top three voices in the sport globally. He is celebrated for his deep technical insight, thorough preparation, and his ability to elevate iconic moments with poetic phrasing

Yes, Ian Bishop, "the gold standard."

was there an award for that

@jacksparrow

Ian was inducted into T&T's Hall of Fame for his contribution to cricket.

On the global cricket commentary circuit he is sought after..

1st mentioned was good enough....the great John Arlott fuh me is undoubtedly de g.o.a.t!!

@CCW

I bet you're influenced by John Arlott's summary of the day's play when L G Rowe made that 48 runs (or so) on the evening before his final score of 302 the following day.

To paraphrase, "Poor Bob Willis, the faster he bowled, the faster the ball left for the boundary. He even tried a bouncer, only to watch it land in the Kensington stand.".

I rate commentators on what I learn from them, hence why I rate Hubie Brown (basketball) so highly, taught me a lot about the sport.

@natty_forever

I agree, and that's why I think John Arlott was the best.

There was an incident where a batsman doubled over in pain in reaction to a hit in the ribcage. When other commies (as well as the lay person) would've described it in expansive verbiage, all John Arlott said was, (exact quote) "The ball establishes painful contact.".

Yes, there began my 'concise expressions' emulation. 😎

@Drapsey

And let me add I rate Bishop highly.

Deservedly. Iconic voice and excellent commentary, astute analyses at times. Hard to be good on when yr team and legacy are not doing well. At least West Indies have a winner on show
