Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that the second match between the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the 2026 West Indies Championship has been abandoned as a draw due to dangerous pitch conditions at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.

A statement from CWI explained that play was halted in the first session of Tuesday’s third day “after the pitch began to exhibit unpredictable and uneven behaviour, raising serious concerns for player safety.” 

Facing up to the pace of Jayden Seales, Leeward Islands player Jeremiah Louis was struck on the helmet while batting. 

He was “immediately attended to by medical personnel and subsequently transported to hospital to be evaluated for a possible concussion and is reported to be in stable condition,” the statement continued.

The second Test match between England and the West Indies in Antigua in February 2009 was abandoned after just 10 balls due to a dangerous, sandy outfield at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.The stadium was immediately suspended from hosting any international cricket for a minimum of 12 months.Despite the severity of the embarrassment, which David Richardson (then ICC General Manager) called a "fiasco" for the game's image, the board was not fined.

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium again came under scrutiny in February 2019, when the pitch used for another Test between the sides was rated "below average" by the ICC due to uneven bounce, receiving a demerit point.Match referee Jeff Crowe cited "uneven bounce" at the southern pavilion end as the primary issue.Several batsmen were struck on the hands and body by unplayable deliveries that "leaped" off a length.

I remember the sand stadium well. not to mention to fairly recent white ball series against England where any team that won the toss batted second and won. So we have an unplayable pitch at Sir Viv and a runfest pitch at Sabina. Neither is good for the regional game.

If Sabina is a Runfest pitch... How come 27 all out occurred there last year?

As you may be aware, a year has passed and there are usually several strips on any ground and this was not a day/night match, there was no pink ball and Mitch Starc was not bowling.

Viv Richards stadium got a warning as recently as 2019 when only 3 players were able to ake 50 or more(bravo, moeen ali and bairstow)
