Rodriguez’s Essequibo brooch draws concern

As Venezuela’s Interim President Delcy Rodriguez met with Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley inviting the country to invest in Venezuelan oil and gas earlier this week, she wore a brooch appearing to depict a map of Venezuela that includes the disputed Essequibo region of Guyana on her chest.Rodriguez grouped Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago into a category of “vassal states” warning them both not to cooperate with US forces for any attack against Venezuela. This warning came as Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister issued her own to Venezuela, that any attack on Guyana would grant the US unflinching access to T&T’s territory.

In February 2024, Rodriguez had claimed that Ali had disposed of pending delimitation, granting transnational energy companies’ concessions and breaching international law, in a post to her X account. “Venezuela does not recognize nor will recognize the fraudulent boundaries of the dispossessing award. And it will never renounce the defense of its rights. Our response will be proportional to the gross violations by Guyana and its imperialist masters!” she had written.

In a letter penned to Caricom President Terrence Drew today, Ali noted with concern Rodriguez’s “public display” of the incorrect map. He wrote that Guyana respects the sovereign right of Caricom states to engage in bilateral relations with all partners, including Venezuela.“The use of CARICOM engagements to project or promote a territorial claim against a Member State risk being interpreted as acquiescence or tolerance. No action, whether deliberate or inadvertent, should create the impression that the Community's platforms may be used to advance claims now before the International Court of Justice. CARICOM's principled support for Guyana must be reflected not only in declarations, but also in the context and conduct of official engagements.”

Caricom backs Guyana; warns against using regional platforms to advance territorial claims

Caricom has warned that its platforms must not be used to advance territorial claims, even as it reaffirmed strong support for Guyana’s sovereignty following concerns raised by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali over recent actions from Venezuela. The response comes after President Ali wrote to Caricom chairman and St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, raising alarm over what he described as a “provocative” display by Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez during recent visits to regional states. In his letter, Ali objected to the use of imagery depicting Guyana’s Essequibo region as part of Venezuela during official engagements, warning that such actions risk undermining regional unity.

“I note with grave concern the public display of a map purporting to incorporate Guyana’s Essequibo region as part of Venezuela,” Ali wrote. The “map” he’s referring to is a brooch worn by Rodriguez on her outfits. He stressed that while Guyana respects the sovereign right of Caricom countries to engage Venezuela diplomatically, it is “deeply regrettable” that those engagements have been accompanied by symbols asserting Venezuela’s territorial claim.

“The use of Caricom engagements to project or promote a territorial claim risks being interpreted as acquiescence or tolerance,” Ali said. Meanwhile, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley who did not directly address the correspondence from Caricom or the Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali, issued a statement on X yesterday evening after the letters became public.Sharing a video of her meeting with Delcy Rodríguez, Mottley wrote: “Barbados and Venezuela are bound by more than geography. We are bound by the urgent need to work together for our people. We must not let history or language prevent us from finding the best possible cooperation for our two countries and our two peoples.”

Venezuela govt reaffirms claim to Essequibo region

Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez and her government has again made it clear that the will continue to defend its claim to ownership of the disputed Essequibo region in Guyana.“We will soon be at the International Court of Justice in the coming days to reaffirm our historic position, which is international law and respect for the Geneva Agreement. It is outrageous when Venezuela is attacked, and that is why we are undertaking this entire process of spiritual revitalisation for the good of our nation,” she stated at an anti-sanctions rally at the Municipal Theatre of Valencia in the Venezuelan state of Carabobo on Tuesday. She added: “You know that the president of Guyana is now causing a scandal because I always wear the pin with the map of Venezuela. The only map I’ve ever known. Now they’re even bothered by how I dress.”

Her statement was in reaction to the Guyana government’s complaint to Caribbean leaders on Tuesday that Rodriguez wore a controversial pin, depicting the map of Guyana’s western region that Venezuela has long claimed as its own, during official visits to Barbados and Grenada. The pin is in the shape of Guyana’s resources-rich Essequibo region that makes up two-thirds of its territory, which is at the heart of a centuries-old territorial dispute with Venezuela, which neighbours Guyana to west.President of Venezuela’s National Assembly Jorge Rodríguez also defended Venezuela’s claims. In a post on X yesterday, he wrote: “We maintain an incontrovertible position on our Guayana Esequiba. It is a historical, legal, and moral right; it belongs to all Venezuelan women and men. Our response remains one of peace diplomacy, but with the firmness of a people that does not renounce its sovereignty.”

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil also added his voice, saying that Venezuela’s territorial sovereignty cannot be erased with letters or with what he called the “improvised shows” of Guyanese President Irfaan Ali regarding the Essequibo region. In a statement, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister described as “unprecedented” Guyanese President Irfaan Ali’s attempt to question even the clothing of other heads of state.“The garment that obsesses him today is nothing more than the expression of a historical truth, strongly validated since the 1966 Geneva Agreement,” stated the Venezuelan diplomat, who indicated that Guyana ‘s stance reflects a “desperate tone” and an “erratic manoeuvre” to evade responsibility. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is scheduled to begin oral hearings on May 4 regarding the Essequibo dispute, a border region administered by Georgetown and claimed by Caracas. Guyana brought the case before the ICJ in 2018, seeking confirmation of the legal validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award, which establishes the border between the two countries.
