If the first ball from Seales bowling to Nissanka had been taken by Carty, we could have won the match. He went on to score 79 runs. Sri Lanka won by 41 runs. Do the maths.
Catches win matches!
Thats not how things work. The timeline would have been different
We selected a poorly balanced side
And those we selected played poorly
We suck from head to tail
@Windiesfan78
That’s a stretch…..and then some.
it was the first ball of the match. A whole 49.5 overs left for them to bat.
By the same token, you could say it would have brought Mendis to the crease earlier and he would end up with a ton and they coulda score 375 in their 50 overs.
Ease up on Carty
Well, back to the drawing board, the team was balanced they just didn't get it right. I suspected after Greaves got out the team was going to struggle, he was the set batter
@natty_forever
Correct, I'm not saying that players don't make mistakes but apparently it was a simple catch. The problem is that we are so accustomed to losing that we accept mediocrity from our storied team. Poor fielding has crept into our team again and we are running out of excuses. I think Carty is a talented player and hopefully this was a one off. However, as I stated in another post, he has to take some of the blame for the loss.
@Windiesfan78
The drop was a big miss. Possibly could have affected the outcome. But who's to know.
Team.balance must be viewed in retrospect. Going into this game if we are honest, few will say that the WI XI was the wrong unit. And it may have well been ideal given conditions etc
There's also the other question of 'ring rust' for having not played the format for sometime.
But there is little margin for error. WI needs to tie its boots traps quickly, otherwise face the indignity of facing qualifiers for the ODIWC

Wrong . From the time i looked at the squad i posted that the balance was wrong
It makes no sense playing four out and out bowlers plus Chase, Forde and Greaves
We were never going to put up a good total with that line up

You are contradicting yourself with this statement
@InHindsight
@Windiesfan78
How so . We were were doomed as soon as they selected that team
Forde , Greaves and Chase should never play on any team with four full bowlers
@InHindsight
That is a serious thing, it is sad to say that we are in this position again. We are not improving to be honest and I'm surprised that Sammy is still the head coach. Any other team would have moved on at this point but apparently CWI appears to be contented with the decision of making Sammy the all format coach. Spare a thought for Andre Cooley who managed to coach a team that won in Australia after how many years. It seems like every time we are moving in the right direction, a spanner is put in the works.
@pariaman
I wouldn't say we were doomed, the problem is that we always have a collapse at some point in the match. That total could have been chased if Campbell wasn't run out and if AlJo had conceded less runs as well. It wasn't beyond this team and I hope that we can by some miracle win the next 2 matches. I won't hold my breath.
I fully expect Sammy to double down and go with the same team
He is someone who refuses to acknowledge mistakes and hopes things will change by itself and prove him right
He is not a proactive coach
@pariaman
It’s not now that we have relied on all rounders to fill specialist batting and bowling roles in white ball cricket.
By and large, that “strategy” has not served us well. Not when Pollard was captain, not when Holder was captain, not when Powell was captain, and now not under Hope.
I understand the reasoning and temptation to do so, but for a management team that’s so in bed with analytics, it’s surprising that they continue to employ this selection policy.
Of course, it’s no guarantee that a specialist bat &/ or bowler would have altered the performance and result, but at least try something different nuh.
Today I was listening to the Kieran Powell podcast and he mentioned that they played too many allrounders in this match.
His solution? Bring in Jason Holder for one of the fast bowlers.
WTF????
