Police Shootings in Jamaica are out of control

That shootout in the Gorge today is troubling. Five dead.

Saw when the change began in the '70's during Manley's state of emergency. The young police went beyond the old's lack of respect for only a certain class but started having widespread lack of respect for life and all Jamaicans. Mind you, that 1ar state of emergency (and gun court) did have some if not full legitimacy. As Pernell Charles explained- ''When I visited Michael in his last days on his sick bed he explained to me the intelligence he was given and asked me what do I think he should've done. I told him I would've locked me up''

Fire can only be fought with fire, as the youthful murderers and criminals cannot continue to indiscriminately going around the island taking innocent people’s lives without consequences or fear. There has to come a point when the State has to stand up, as we are rapidly approaching a state of anarchy. I noticed that when criminals take the lives of innocent people whether motives are robberies, scamming, extortion or contract killing, family members enjoy the proceeds of crime. However, when police find these criminals and deal with them properly, then all of a sudden family and neighbours are in the news crying and proclaiming their innocence. It will be difficult to fight crime in Jamaica or other Caribbean islands when it’s considered a lucrative business and perpetrators are regarded as heroes in their respective communities.

@Slipfeeler

Jamaica's biggest problem is that the most destructive and dangerous criminals wear suits and ties on a daily basis.

The gunmen, scammers and the more obvious criminals are of course very dangerous , but not as destructive as the suits and ties.

@Slipfeeler

Police been killing youths for 50yrs and crime only increases.

Good policing based on effective intelligence and community relations is a better approach. That way chances of taking down the top this crippling the bottom is greater.

Then put more resources into those communities so more youths can get good jobs and live better lives.

@Trex

We were both writing different versions of the same thing almost simultaneously. I stopped to talk to someone before saving

@Brerzerk

Agreeing with you guys but because community economics and personal security are intertwined into the proceeds of illicit activities, this makes it difficult but not impossible to solicit the appropriate intelligence necessary to take down an area leader aka the don and his gang of cronies.

@Slipfeeler

sorry - this is madness

security forces fatally shot 11 men across five separate operations

Thu, Jun 11, '26 at 8:19 AM

@Trex

di truth re di suits

Thu, Jun 11, '26 at 10:55 AM

@Chrissy

Sounds like madness but no one knows exactly how many more multiple murderous persons are out there, maybe 11 is just a drop in the bucket, out of over 200 plus gangs operating all over the island, which is unfortunate but we have to face our realities.

Thu, Jun 11, '26 at 3:58 PM

Your realities appear to ignore due process

Thu, Jun 11, '26 at 5:28 PM

@Chrissy

I do not see how due process is helpful in stopping the demise of so many innocent persons. In Cuba there is no due process and also no crime !!

Thu, Jun 11, '26 at 6:34 PM

@Slipfeeler

That is not true. There is due process and significant community policing.
