A ODE TO KANE WILLIAMSON - a rare breed.

There have been greater accumulators of runs, louder stroke-makers, and men who commanded larger headlines, but few batsmen have embodied the spirit of Test cricket as completely as Kane Williamson. Undoubtedly, New Zealand's best ever batsman and for me the best of this current generation, Kane batted as though every delivery deserves its own careful consideration, never hurried, never rattled, never seeking applause. He was the one batsman who seem to have hours and multiple options for each delivery. While others wage war against bowlers, Williamson seems to solve them, constructing innings with the patience of a craftsman and the precision of a watchmaker. In an age that often celebrates power and spectacle, he reminds us that elegance, judgment, and restraint remain among cricket's highest virtues. That he said he does not only watch the delivery after it leaves the bowler's hand, he watch the bottom section of every ball bowled tells us he was a rare breed.

What makes Williamson special is not merely the runs he scores but the manner in which he scores them. His balance at the crease is almost poetic; his placement turns crowded fields into open countryside. Against the fiercest pace attacks and the most cunning spinners, he appears to possess an extra fraction of time unavailable to ordinary mortals.

There is no swagger in his success, no theatrical celebration, only the quiet satisfaction of a man mastering a difficult craft. Watching him bat is less like witnessing a contest and more like observing a grandmaster move pieces across a chessboard several moves ahead of everyone else.

Yet perhaps his greatest quality lies beyond technique. Williamson carries greatness with uncommon humility. As captain, teammate, and ambassador for the game, he has represented cricket's noblest ideals: dignity in victory, grace in defeat, and respect for opponents. Long after scorecards fade and records are surpassed, the image that will endure is of Kane Williamson standing calmly at the crease, head still, eyes focused, guiding New Zealand with quiet determination, he was wont to say, "the runs I score are not my runs, they belong to New Zealand." A batsman whose genius spoke softly, but whose legacy will echo loudly through cricket history. Kane Williamson, a rare breed indeed. Enjoy your retirement Great One!

Undoubtedly one of the greatest of this era and possibly in the history of test cricket as well. A man who has the qualities of Frank Worrell in his grace and dignity at all times. One of my very favourite cricketers. Wishing him a long and happy retirement and the ability to contribute greatly to NZ and World cricket in the future.

"Great" is a great word an should only be used to describe those fully deserving of such an accolade an Williamson falls easily into that category ....a true modern day great!!
