You just hit the problem...
Experience does not translate into development when the experience itself is fundamentally flawed.
The recent T20I match against Sri Lanka exposed a deeply alarming reality about the technical state of West Indies batting. While it is easy to isolate the struggles of a young prospect like Ackeem Auguste, the real crisis lies in a systemic blind spot that extends from the rookie tier all the way to the veteran core, overseen by a coaching staff whose traditional credentials face legitimate scrutiny.
Auguste facing the Sri Lankan spin attack, he looked completely paralyzed, like a "deer caught in the headlights." He was technically exposed, tactically clueless, and left entirely without answers to the turning ball. If Auguste’s failure were an isolated incident of a 22-year-old learning the ropes, it could be excused. However, it is a mirror image of a broader epidemic. Senior batsmen, men who have occupied spots in the national side for years, frequently put on the exact same clueless display against high-quality spin. When long-serving, experienced international players look just as vulnerable and technically deficient as an unseasoned rookie, it proves that experience is not translating into development.
The center of this structural stagnation today is the appointment of Head Coach Daren Sammy. However, he was appointed to lead the national team across formats without holding the traditional high-level, elite coaching certifications normally required for an international role. While a charismatic leader can manage egos and build team chemistry, a team plagued by deep technical deficiencies against spin requires elite, specialized technical coaching. Motivation cannot replace mechanics. By elevating a coach based on his past playing laurels rather than formal tactical and technical training credentials, the board has created a system where fundamental batting regression goes uncorrected.
If batsmen have spent years lunging forward blindly from the crease on a pre-meditated path without looking at the revolutions on the ball, a motivational coach cannot fix that in a three-day pre-match camp. Sammy can organize a great team meeting, boost morale, and talk about "situational awareness" and "mindset." However, motivation cannot alter muscle memory.
