Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander was last night expected to sign three preventive detention orders (PDOs) that would allow police to detain businessman Dominic Hadeed; his wife, Genevierve Hadeed; and their relative 69-year-old Westmoorings businesswoman Star Sabga, under the Emergency Powers Regulations issued during the state of emergency (SoE)
Sources told the Express that if the orders are executed, the two women are to be housed at the Women’s Prison, Golden Grove, Arouca, while Hadeed would be held at the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre, Santa Rosa.
The Express was informed that the proposed detention orders relate to national security issues. The specific allegations are expected to be outlined in the PDOs.

Tracing the rise of the ‘one per cent’ label in T&T

It’s a phrase that stirs emotions in T&T—the one per cent, commonly associated with the Syrian-Lebanese community. On June 10, Attorney General John Jeremie singled out the community using that phrase—the one per cent—and alluded to that community being a gang. This week, Guardian Media examines the one per cent class narrative and the perception it's shaped for that community. Government Senator Phillip Alexander also defended Jeremie’s controversial use of the term “one per cent” during the debate on the extension of the State of Emergency three weeks ago, arguing that the phrase is globally associated with wealth and privilege rather than any specific ethnic group. “I have Syrian ancestry and unfortunately, tagging the word one per cent to the Syrian community happened in a video that was done with Anthony Bourdain and that went viral on its own,” Alexander said. “But globally, the term one per cent refers to the top one per cent of the wealthiest people in the country. That is why we are the 99 per cent as a movement.” Opposition Senator Faris Al-Rawi disagreed with Alexander’s defense, insisting that the AG’s comments could only reasonably be interpreted as a reference to the Syrian-Lebanese community.

Local businessman Mario Sabga-Aboud, who was one of several guests on Bourdain’s culinary and travel documentary, described the Syrian-Lebanese community as the “smallest but most powerful.” Businessman Peter George, who was seated at the dinner table, estimated the community at under 5,000.George said that at one time the country had a huge middle class, which was a sort of security in terms of any possible conflict between the “haves and have-nots.” Sabga-Aboud apologized following a firestorm of criticism from fellow citizens who felt his remarks were insensitive and irresponsible.

Speaking to party supporters, Rowley made no apology for representing the largest block of Syrians, Arabs and Lebanese in his Diego Martin West constituency, as he slammed Persad-Bissessar, then opposition leader, for descending into “gutter politics.” During a UNC Monday night forum in Claxton Bay, Persad-Bissessar had said, “They (one per cent) tried to own Mr (Patrick) Manning but they couldn’t do that...they tried to own me but I sent them packing; they have their Oreo now who is their guy in Keith Christopher Rowley, and that’s how the one per cent friends and family of Rowley controls him.”

Narps : Eric Williams gave the 1% opportunities he never gave to his ilk.😡 I went to school with a lot of the 1% and saw opportunities given to them by various PNM governments for financial backing. Police looked the other way.

Why should Rowley have to apologize for supporting members of his constituency? Are they not worthy of support because they do not support the UNC? And, claiming that she is not part of the 1%, is she aware that a substantial section of the other 99% she claims to be part of does not trust her, and would never fall for her hypocrisy? Then, this one referred to the so-called 1%n as, probably all holding dual citizenship, and supporting PNM. Is dual citizenship a crime? And, if so, why don't you give up yours? It is sad the low levels that pass here.

@Besar

The more you post, sadly, it show how moronic you are?

No need for a rebuttal.

note: I never had dual citizenship.

THE preventive detention orders (PDOs) against businessman Dominic Hadeed, 52, his wife Genevieve,42 and relative Star Sabga, 69, alleged that they engaged in a conspiracy to murder Government officials following statements made in Parliament.
“And I add only that if you target me, as I expect you will, or my Prime Minister, as you have, hiding behind the newspapers you control, if, as our intelligence suggests, you have in contemplation more and direct action, the indignity of the cells at Teteron await,” he said.
“To those persons among us who consider that their wealth allows them guarantees from prosecution, and from the attention of law enforcement bodies, we say those days are behind us. If you behave as gang members do, you shall be treated in exactly the same way that blue-collar gang members are,” he said.
He added: “If your designation happens to be within the 1%, it happens to be Sixx, Seven or Eight, Teteron awaits.”
