Subject: The CANADA Act and the Reality of Your Self-Inflicted Trade War
Representative Tenney,
Your press release regarding the Combating Attacks on our National Alcoholic Drinks by Allies (CANADA) Act is a masterclass in rewriting history. Accusing Canadian provinces of holding American alcohol "hostage" is utterly delusional. Canada did not start this trade war; Washington did.
The blanket provincial bans on American wine and spirits are the direct, predictable consequence of your administration’s economic aggression. The White House foolishly claimed that the United States "does not need Canada" while slapping a 25% blanket tariff on Canadian goods under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). If you are looking for who to blame for the 78% collapse in U.S. wine exports, look in the mirror.
Before you launch a Section 301 investigation to "punish" Canada, you need a stark reality check on just how dependent the United States is on a few Canadian resources you take for granted:
- Crippling American Manufacturing: Canada is the largest foreign supplier of aluminum to the United States. Your domestic aerospace, automotive, defense, and construction sectors completely rely on low-carbon Canadian aluminum to function. Levying tariffs on our metals only drives up costs for American factories and kills American jobs.
- Keeping the American Lights On: Canada is the single largest exporter of electricity to the United States. Your northern border supplies the power grid that keeps American homes, hospitals, and manufacturing plants operational.
- Fueling American Infrastructure: Canada provides over 4.3 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S., accounting for roughly 60% of all American crude imports. If Canada decides to throttle energy exports in kind, the U.S. economy will ground to a halt.
- Securing American Agriculture: Canada is the world’s leading producer of potash, a critical ingredient in the fertilizers that sustain American farming. Cutting off or driving up the cost of Canadian potash will instantly trigger a massive food security crisis and soaring inflation across the American heartland.
American beverage manufacturers and workers are suffering because Washington threw a protectionist temper tantrum, coupled with insulting, juvenile rhetoric about absorbing Canada as a "51st state." Canadian provincial leaders like Premier Doug Ford have been explicit: American products will return to Canadian shelves only when the United States rescinds its illegal, punitive tariffs.
Stop posturing with escalatory legislation that only highlights your lack of economic awareness. If you actually want to save American jobs and rescue your domestic spirits industry, demand that the felon U.S. President drop the tariffs and treat your largest trading partner and closest security ally with mutual respect.
