Rowley claims State officials threatened him

...warns of political persecution; denies Hadeeds financed PNM

Former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley says he has received threats from “certain officials of state” but insists he is not intimidated, warning that he believes the country is entering a dangerous period where state power is being used against perceived political opponents. Speaking exclusively with Guardian Media at his Goodwood Park, Diego Martin home yesterday, Rowley claimed threats have been directed not only at him but the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) Balisier House headquarters. “They could target me if they wish because I’ve been getting threats from certain officials of state that I am next, and Balisier House is next,” Rowley said.

“They could do that if they wish, but I only have one country and that country is Trinidad and Tobago. I fought for it and I will continue to fight for it.” Asked who made the threats against him, Rowley declined to provide names. Asked whether he was concerned, the former prime minister said, “Worried? Me? I look worried to you? Do I look worried to you? No. I have one country. I fought many battles in this country and for this country and I will continue so to do.”

Rowley accused the Kamla Persad-Bissessar Government of targeting people based on perceived political affiliation, saying citizens were becoming fearful. “The Government has declared war on the people of Trinidad and Tobago, largely on the basis of who they perceive them to be supporters of politically. And if this country doesn’t believe me, those who are feeling the pressure now, my advice to you is ban your belly, there’s more to come,” he said. He said the administration was operating on the premise that “if you prospered under the PNM, you must be destroyed.”

Rowley rejects Kamla’s Caricom ‘victory’

‘You started the fire, then put it out’

Former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley has dismissed suggestions that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar secured a diplomatic victory at the recent Caricom Heads of Government Meeting, saying instead that regional leaders “bailed out Trinidad and Tobago from itself” after what he described as an unnecessary foreign policy dispute.

Rowley was responding to claims that Persad-Bissessar emerged victorious after Caricom leaders agreed to seek an advisory opinion from the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on issues surrounding the reappointment process of Caricom Secretary General Dr Carla Barnett. Rowley rejected that interpretation, arguing that the matter only reached that stage because of the way Trinidad and Tobago handled the issue.

“It was a totally unnecessary, unforced error by Trinidad and Tobago in the way it went about, in a confrontational way, to treat with an issue which other people would have dealt with differently,” he said.

Blue Waters land deal sent to police

Cabinet has rescinded decisions to grant land leases to Blue Waters Products Ltd, and Attorney General John Jeremie, SC, has forwarded the matter to the police. A Government official yesterday confirmed this in response to questions from the Express. The matter involves 450 acres on the Orange Grove Estate. Blue Waters is owned by Dominic Hadeed and his wife, Genevieve, who were arrested on June 24 at their Westmoorings home while police investigated an alleged conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Attorney General and other members of the Government, as well as alleged offences under the Emergency Powers Regulations.

Days before the April 28 general election, at its last Cabinet meeting on April 17, 2025, rushed the approval of a lease for a “water company”. He said on the night before the election, April 27, 2025, a WhatsApp voice note was sent by a person named a former PNM general election candidate who worked in the Office of the Attorney General. He said the voice note instructed a person to proceed with the file.

“Basically what she is saying, Mr. Speaker, in the voice note is that the AG just gave the instruction, the file can’t reach by you as yet, proceed with the lease,” he said, noting that the former AG at that time was Camille Robinson-Regis. The minister said the lease price for C1 was cut in half by Cabinet in 2019. He said with regard to C2, the approved premium was $50 million, but the offer made was $22.1 million. He said when public servants got wind of this, no lease was prepared from 2019 to 2022.
