He didn’t begin all that well. His first few deliveries were too short and he was lucky to escape serious punishment. Amazingly, he picked up a wicket from the last ball of his first over when Henry Nicholls pulled another short delivery straight to the midwicket fielder.

For the next over Lawes was either too short or too full for the most part. The second ball was short and pulled over midwicket for six. The last ball was also short but the pull shot just managed to evade the grasp of the midwicket fielder.

Despite a wicket in his first over this was not an auspicious start. His line was decent enough but showed little control of length and he was removed from the attack. Perhaps the captain felt he’d be more effective from the other end because he was brought back only a few overs later from the opposite end.
