What:

Maximum temperatures of 30 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Minimum temperatures of 20 to 24 degrees Celsius.

Humidex values of 38 to 45.

When:

Ending either Wednesday evening or Thursday evening.

Additional information:

Tuesday will mark the peak of this heat event. Maximum temperatures on Tuesday near 37 degrees Celsius are expected for some areas over southwestern Ontario, around the Greater Golden Horseshoe and eastern Ontario.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category.

A historical heat wave is gripping Ontario, with several new all-time records in jeopardy

Ontario is experiencing its second significant heat event of the summer, shattering long-standing temperature records. Monday marked a historically hot day, with Armstrong, Ontario, recording a temperature of 40.7°C. This sets a new all-time high for the community, highlighting the dangerous intensity of this heat event.

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is set to experience exceptional heat on Tuesday, with some forecasts suggesting highs between 37°C and 40°C! If Toronto hits the projected 38°C, it would mark the city's hottest temperature of the year so far, surpassing the 36°C recorded on July 1.

On Sunday, temperatures felt like the low 40s across northwestern Ontario as the heat and humidity continued to ramp up. Over twenty weather stations across the province recorded daytime temperatures above the 30-degree mark.

In fact, Sioux Lookout, located north of Dryden, briefly held Canada's record for highest daytime temperature so far in 2026 on Sunday after reaching 38°C. That title was quickly stolen, however, by Armstrong, northwest of Lake Nipigon, after temperatures reached the blistering high of 40.7°C on Monday afternoon.

Wildfire smoke is drifting south across Ontario, worsening air quality and posing health risks

Ontario is grappling with some of the world's poorest air quality Wednesday due to wildfire smoke.

Dry conditions and intense heat earlier in the week—peaking at 38°C in Sioux Lookout and 40.8°C in Armstrong on Tuesday—have resulted in a high to extreme fire danger. Hundreds of uncontrolled wildfires are sending thick plumes of smoke into the air.

Smoke from northern Ontario wildfires has spread over 1,000 km, with the jet stream carrying it southeast. Hazy skies, diminished sunlight, and a smoky odor have been reported.

By Wednesday afternoon, wildfire smoke will cause very poor air quality conditions in southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Windsor, and Ottawa

Smoke is expected to linger through much of Thursday, as it expands across the U.S. northeast, including New York City and Washington.

Conditions will gradually improve in eastern Ontario Thursday afternoon, and across southern Ontario by Friday.

Impacts include increased health risks for those with respiratory issues, hazy conditions, and visibly red sunrises and sunsets. Outdoor activities should be limited until air quality improves.

Exactly......we in the North East (NY) here... have Air Quality alerts because of you Canadians. I go out at lunch and while it's hot... temps-wise, it smells like 'burnt' smoke is filling up my lungs......

Its about time all that polluted air the US sends up to Ontario from your Mid West Coal fire plants have been killing us and polluting our lakes for over 8 decades.

At 2:20 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, loonie to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorm Location:

Clusters of thunderstorms are occurring from Lambton County to east of Brantford.

Motion: Moving southeast at 55 km/h

Hazards:

Wind: damaging (90 - 110 km/h)

Hail: loonie to ping pong ball size (2.5 to 4.5 cm)

Rain: heavy (15 - 50 mm)
