SIP Sir Garfield Sobers, the Real Great One

Fri, Jul 17, '26 at 11:50 AM

Former West Indies captain Sir Garfield "Garry" Sobers has died at the age of 89.

Sobers was West Indies captain for seven years between 1965-72, and holds the record for the fourth highest individual Test innings with a score of 365 not out against Pakistan at the age of 23.

Barbados-born Sobers, who is widely regarded as one of the finest to ever play the game, played for the West Indies for 20 years, making both his first and last Test appearances in 1954 and 1974 respectively against England, with the ICC's award for leading men's player of the year named the 'Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy' in his honour.

A statement on Windies Cricket's official X account simply said: "A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers."

Slippy

I never saw him only on videos in Australia.

The Ozzie's spoke about what Bradman said about him.

Rest In Peace Sir Gary.

Was one year old when his career ended but watched You Tube videos on some of the series he played.

So sad, RIP Legend.

Your contribution is immeasurable and you have left an undeniable void in cricket fraternity globally.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends on Mr. Sobers.

Growing up as children throughout the Caribbean, regardless of island of origin, we were always very proud that we had the best batsman in the world.
