Daren Sammy (West Indies head coach): I measure success not only by results. I measure success by improvement, by how we prepare, the changes we’ve made in our preparation, the attention to detail, and how we want to play. It’s about players improving their skill sets, captains becoming more tactical, the culture we’re trying to build getting stronger, and even a player coming to me and saying, “Coach, I really appreciate the work that you and your staff have done.” That’s success to me.

Obviously, results do play a part, but given where we are in our cricket, I’m not trying to work miracles. Right now, success is trusting the process. I genuinely believe we have one of the hardest-working coaching staffs in world cricket.

We may not have as many resources as some other teams, but the work we put into our players every single day is second to none. We never shortchange ourselves. It’s about going into every game understanding that you start again from zero.

Whatever you achieved in the last match, you take the confidence from it, but the process of scoring runs, taking wickets, and applying yourself with both bat and ball remains the most important thing every time we take the field. We will continue drilling those messages into the players, and hopefully we will execute them out on the cricket field.
