Four batters scored centuries, including Amir Jangoo’s 233 in the first test against Sri Lanka. For much of that innings he was accompanied by his captain, who made a welcome return to form with 194. Shai Hope and the impeccable Justin Greaves made hundreds in the second Sri Lanka Test, while Kavem Hodge, John Campbell, Brandon King all chipped in with vital half centuries.
This is especially heartening for a team that has long been plagued by batting inconsistency. The signs seen lately hint at a new and higher level of run production that should go some way in addressing the West Indies’ longstanding problem of run deficiency.
Allied with what has been its high-quality fast bowling, the rise in batting prowess obviously makes for a more competitive unit. Long-suffering Caribbean fans will be highly relieved if the day comes when inroads made by their bowlers are often consolidated by a more reliable batting line-up.
