Severe storms may bring large hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and a tornado risk to southern Ontario today

Storms in southern Ontario today may bring torrential rain, damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes, with the most significant risk occurring late afternoon into the evening.

Severe weather conditions are shaping up across southern Ontario Wednesday, driven by an unstable, humid atmosphere, and a sharp cold front from Michigan acting as the primary trigger. At least two rounds of storms are expected.

All severe hazards are possible this afternoon and evening, including torrential rain, damaging winds, and very large hail (larger than golf ball size). There is also a potential for one or two tornadoes.

Description

At 5:13 p.m. EDT, a line of extremely dangerous thunderstorms is located from Henfryn to Stratford then to Lucan. These extremely dangerous thunderstorms are moving quickly to the east at 100 km/h. Destructive wind gusts, loonie to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain are possible.

Locations and nearby areas that could be impacted include: Stratford, Waterloo, Kitchener, Woodstock, Cambridge, Guelph, Brantford, Milton

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Recommended Action

Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Intense lightning is likely and tornadoes are possible with any thunderstorm that develops.
