Imagine, if you never saw it, a helmetless Viv Richards hooking the lightning quick Jeff Thomson without fear. The West Indian was a renowned exponent of the stroke, as were colleagues Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kallicharran and Richie Richardson. Ian Chappell also played the hook well and Rohit Sharma of a more recent generation.
Imagine a teenaged Ricky Ponting, then a student at the Australian cricket academy under the knowing eye of Rodney Marsh, relentlessly and unerringly hooking balls from a bowling machine set at 100 mph, to wherever his instructor commanded. Ponting was undoubtedly one of the best at the stroke, and it was only towards the end, as his reflexes dimmed and his judgment became less reliable, that one saw signs of the stroke deserting him.
