The Guyana Government’s decision to support a United States policy of forcibly relocating asylum-seekers and migrants to third-world countries has come under blistering criticism from the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA), which says the arrangement reeks of disregard for human rights and may violate Guyana’s Constitution.

The GHRA, in a strongly worded statement, rejected President Irfaan Ali’s reported claim that persons sent to Guyana “chose” to come here, arguing that such a claim is difficult to sustain when the alternatives reportedly include countries such as Equatorial Guinea and El Salvador.

Well, the concern by the GHRA is understood but might be overblown, most of the people being deported have no criminal record and what President Ali said might be what really happened, the deportees probably chose Guyana when faced with the option of going to the Central African Republic instead. From reports, there are support Cuban organizations in Guyana.. Guyana very likely is receiving compensation for taking in the deportees.

(Kaieteur News) – The Government’s decision to accept deportees from third countries under a new migration arrangement with the United States is coming under mounting criticism from political leaders and human rights advocates, who are demanding that the administration immediately make the full agreement public.

The controversy intensified following the arrival in Guyana on Friday of the first six individuals under the arrangement: four from Cuba and two from Afghanistan. No information has been shared on the background of the deportees who arrived here.
