Would Bishop have been an all-time great if he stayed healthy?
He made his Test debut in March 1989 aged 21. The first stress fracture diagnosis came in early 1991. Apart from undergoing what Cricinfo referred to as “intensive rehabilitation” he chose to modify his action by becoming more front-on. He was out for an extended period but seemed in reasonably fine fettle when he returned. He didn’t last long, however, and was forced out again in 1993, this time for two years. He came back and toured England in 1995. But he was struck down again by a broken bone in his foot in 1997. By 1998 the toll of the injuries was too much: the frightening pace had gone and it didn’t seem like he had the same level of control. In March of that year he retired, aged 30.
