Birdie returns home for final farewell

The body of the late celebrated calypsonian The Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco) returned home yesterday. Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin and Sparrow’s son, fashion photographer Sancho Francisco were present to receive the legendary calypsonian’s body at Piarco International Airport.Sparrow, also fondly dubbed “Birdie”, died on September 27 in Queens, New York, USA. He was 91.
“As our nation prepares to bid a final farewell to one of the greatest voices in the history of calypso, we honour a cultural icon whose music, wit and artistry have left an indelible mark on Trinidad and Tobago and the world at large,” the Ministry of Culture said in a statement yesterday.“As such, members of the public are advised that another planning meeting will be led by Benjamin alongside the Francisco family and other officials today.
“Details will therefore be subsequently shared via the ministry’s social media channels for all. Rest well, Mighty Sparrow. Your voice will live on forever,” it added. Meanwhile, segments of Calypso History Month will be dedicated to the Birdie. His impressive array of music includes “Education”, “Congo Man”, “Mae Mae” and “Memories”.
